Angler Of The Year
Brian Metcalf

April
2007

Message From The President:

Welcome to our newest member Danny Wright. Danny, have your wallet full of money and ready at the next meeting to pay for a club hat and shirt. We were able to pressure the members to get you voted in.
Those that fished the April tourney found the fish biting pretty well and beautiful weather. We had 7 of 12 anglers limit out on Saturday and 5 more limits on Sunday. Mack hit the trifecta. He won the tourney and big fish both days. Maybe he won't complain so much about the excessive cost of the hotel now.
Saturday night all 12 anglers joined together to burn some meat (or chicken) on the Bar-B.
Everyone brought their own entree and the club purchased the potatoes, salad and fixin's. MMM GOOD!
Let me remind everyone that the hot summer months are rapidly approaching. Be prepared! Take AND DRINK plenty of water or sport drink; glob on the sunscreen in the morning and again at least one more time during the day, and wear a hat to protect that tender bald spot that most of us are sporting around now.
Lastly, as most of you know, Jere's mother has been very ill for sometime now. It's with great sadness to report that Mrs. Jaillite succumbed to her illness Sunday night. I'd like to pass along the club's deepest condolences to Jere and his family on the passing of their mother.
Jere, don't hesitate to call on us if you need anything.
Until next month,
keep them hooks sharp...

Kevin

Minutes of the Meeting:

The April Pensacola Hawg Hunters meeting was brought to order at 7:00 P.M. on April 18, 2007 at Founaris Brothers Restaurant. President Kevin Simmons presided. There were 19 members present.

Old Buisness:

Danny Wright was voted in as a new member. Everyone enjoyed a nice steak dinner at the "ghost house" in Camden at last month's tournament.

New Buisness:

Discussion about procedures for points and money refund for boater or non-boater canceling before or after Thursday before the tournament.
Cookout for April's tournament to be steaks. BYOS = bring your own steak. The special fund will pay for potatoes and salad.
Glenn Kittrell brought up the idea of providing fishing information to Steve Graham's weekly radio show and get the club name mentioned on the air.
Jim Bailey Sr. asked for someone to replace Bob Smith's spot on his web page. There was discussion about lack of participation in fishing tournaments and not showing up for meetings. Now is the time to start thinking of possible changes to requirements for maintaining membership in the club. The other point was made-so what if some folks don't show up to the meetings or fish tournaments we can still put their money in the bank. Kevin committed to calling the inactive members to check on them and encourage their attendance. Discussion about recruiting drive for club.
Mack told Mexico fishing story about the value of a $5 tip and to beware of a lone green hillside among a bunch of brown mountains.
Kevin mentioned the problem with his boat last tournament and also said he thought he had fishing line wrapped around his prop hub but it was metal leader and cracked the clutch in the hub, recommended keeping an extra one in the boat for immediate repairs.
John Buck brought up the interesting data Bob Ward had on his site regarding the bass population on the Mobile Delta.

April Tournament:

This was another one of those fishing trips with a lot of anticipation of lots of fish to be caught. The last time we fished in Apalch was October, we caught 113 fish for a total weight of 165.12 lbs., and 15 limits were caught. This time we didn't catch quite as much but we had 4 less fishermen this time too.

1st Place
Mack Cramer

If you ratio the number of fishermen to the number of fish caught we caught more per man this time than in October…11.83 compared to 10.32.
So what does all of this mean? If you try hard enough statistics can make anything look good but it really doesn't have much to do with fishing.

2nd Place
Pete Potter

(The fish don't read the same books I read about where they are supposed to be and what they should be biting on so I doubt very seriously if they give a hoot about stats.)
Most everybody did pretty well on pre-fish Friday adding to the promise of a good tournament. Saturday's catch was really pretty good overall with half the anglers bringing a limit back to the dock. Sunday dropped off a little but there were still 5 limits caught. That all sounds pretty good if you were one of those that caught the limits…

3rd Place
Ron Fairbanks

If not then it was just another mediocre fishing trip but the weather and the company was as good as gets. The real problem was finding some good clear water with structure, the main river was muddy. I do have a news flash about the the predominant bait that produced the most fish….drum roll please …June bug trick & finesse worm (except of course Mack's buzz bait). There I did it…the cat is out of the bag.

4th Place
Jim Bailey Sr

Speaking of Mack, too bad about his live well…Hopefully he will be able to fill us in on what happened so we can try to prevent the same thing from happening again in the future. I guess all in all we could call it Mack's weekend, he won just about everything except the Boo ray…Congratulations Mack! Good job to Ken for going the entire weekend without smoking....I heard this is a good rumor so it doesn't matter if it is actually true or not. One last bit of statistical comparison: After last years April Tournament our total catch was 327 fish for 455.5 lbs with 21 limits, this year we have 243 fish for 343.29 lbs with 23 limits.
