TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
December 12, 2009
Scott's Landing

The Tensaw River delta was the site for our December tournament. We launched out of Scott's Landing on the causeway.
The river was rolling pretty well with the rains we have had. Speaking of rain, I need to say that it was still raining and also quite chilly for our area. Yes, 41 degree temps and heavy rail squalls made for a comfortable time if you are a duck hunter but it was tough for bass fishermen. 18 members and 1 guest decided to test our skills against the tough fishing conditions.

Dan Nash, (2009 Slammer Award Winner) was my partner. We took special care to try to avoid any nominations for the coming year. We had talked about making a run up to Dennis Creek near the mid-delta area in hopes that the water would not be pouring through the back and maybe even finding a bit of better colored water to fish. However as usual the best made plans need a back up and as it was so cold and raining steadily at the blast-off we decided to fish nearby in Bay Minette Basin. At least we would not have far to run if we decided to quit early! As we neared our destination we stopped and started fishing a feeder creek and Dan immediately hooked up a 7-8 lb grinnel. Hey, at least it was a bite! As we got out and into the basin I caught a nice keeper bass and then we started fishing any grass line we could find and we literally found fish in all of them. We missed a lot of hits and had many get off on the way to the boat but by 9 AM Dan had his limit. We were fishing worms in less than 2 feet of water and with the rain and high winds we really had a tough time feeling the hits because we had to use 1/8 and 1/16 sinkers to get the fish to bite. We could not get bit on spinners or anything but worms. By 11:30 I finally got my limit. I fished with a Texas rig and Dan fished a wacky rig. I probably got 5 hits to his one but his hook up ration was nearly perfect while mine was about 20%. By the time we decided to leave we each had culled a few and even though the afternoon was a slower bite for us, the fish were still there. We were the only ones fishing in the entire basin and had the whole thing to ourselves. The only boats to even come near were duck hunters and we only saw 2 of them. I guess everyone who may have seen us out there thought we were crazy to be in the middle of such a big bay in that nasty weather. Maybe we were, but it sure was fun to catch fish all day long and even more satisfying to have my boat to take 1st and 2nd places in the tournament.

At the scales there were many stories most about how bad the weather was. Everyone had a chance to prove the worth of their rain suits. Coming in 4th place with a limit weighing 5.32 lbs. was Jim Bailey Sr. Jeff Weaver took the 3rd spot with a limit at 6.14 lbs. John Buck took 2nd with a limit weighing 6.79 lbs. Dan Nash took the win with his limit at 7.71 lbs.
Kevin Simmons had the lunker at 2.79 lbs.

Most fish were caught on worms but many caught fish on spinner baits, and although neither Dan nor myself caught many short fish others reported catching lots of shorts all day. The predominant colors were as usual green pumpkin and junebug.

One last word….It seems like we may already have a "slammer" nomination for this year as Dave Dyess found a sand bar/mud flat and had to call for assistance. Thankfully no one was hurt or injured except for a bit of pride!!

Our next tournament is on the Tensaw Delta again but out of Cliff's Landing a bit north of the causeway.
The winter months are a good time for fishing the delta areas and good for producing good numbers of fish but most will be small. Always use caution when on the water in the cold weather and err on the side of safety always.
Remember that tide changes tend to be a bit larger in the winter especially with the north winds and areas you can usually get across may become unpassable in low tide conditions. Until next time…

Keep your Hooks Sharp!
