TOURNAMENT REPORT

Fish River
February 20, 2010
Hwy 98 Bridge

Due to the high water and flooding conditions that existed on the Tensaw system our tournament was moved to Fish River.
It is a small local river near Foley, Alabama, with limited drainage and was in really good shape for fishing. Although it is a small river, it does have a decent bass population and even produces "real" lunkers occasionally. Water conditions were great with clearing river and fairly clear creeks and lakes. The surface temp was in the mid to upper 50's. We had clear to partly cloudy skies and a high of almost 65. Wow..what a welcome change from the recent cold days!

My partner for the tournament was Bob Jones. Even though he is new to our club, he has been fishing the area for many years,
and I was glad to have him as my partner for the day. Our plan was to run up to the 2nd bridge and start just above it with spinners, and worms, and jigs. Bob and I made the run upstream to some places where I have caught fish in the past. The water was really great in color and the current was just about right. We really had high hopes. Bob caught a short fish on a green pumpkin trick worm and things started looking better. What a joke for us!! Long story short…. We fished upriver almost all day but never put a keeper in the boat. Each of us caught several short fish but no keepers. We had a great time fishing together.
It was my first time to get to fish with Bob and hope we can fish again.
He is a very good fisherman and a great guy, and we had an enjoyable day even if only catching short fish.

At the scales there were 10 members who did not find keepers, and we were all a sad bunch. However, as usual there are some who find the right keys and bring in the fish. Taking the win with 4 fish weighing 5.77 lbs was ole
"Chinnhook" (sort of sounds like a salmon) Jeff Weaver. In addition I heard he also won a crank bait.
2nd place went to Dave Bock who had a limit weighing in at 5.49 lbs. Getting back to the winner's circle was Buddy Yates in 3rd place with 4 fish for 4.69 lbs. Buddy also set a club record by catching the largest mullet ever on a crank bait
(approx 225 lbs and on 12 lb line ta boot)!!!
Dave Dyess took 4th with 4 fish at 4.52 lbbs. Lee Brannon did it again at Fish River and grabbed the lunker at 2.55 lbs.
(I think he has them tied off on a bush up river somewhere.)

Congratulations to any who caught keepers on this day. It was really a tough day on the water at Fish River.
Most fish were caught on soft plastics, in junebug or green pumpkim colors. A few were caught on spinners and cranks.
As far as I know only one fisherman was caught and he was caught on a crank bait.

Next month we move to Lake Seminole for a 2 day tournament. Make your plans to be there and catch a bigg-un!!!
Remember we'll have a cook out on Saturday night at the tournament, and as always it promises to be a great time.
See you at the meeting and the tournament.

Until next time….Keep your Hooks Sharp!

John
