TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
January 23, 2010
Cliff's Landing

The Hawg Hunters fished their January tournament on the Tensaw River out of Cliff's landing. We had 10 boats and 20 fishermen. The weather had warmed a bit from the past 2 weeks when we had below freezing temps every day. Even though the air was warmer the water temps were still in the mid 40's in the main river. Warmer water could be found in some creeks and lakes and bays. We had another heavy rainfall 2 days prior to the tournament and the water was once again high and running hard and clearer water was hard to find. Our day turned out to be a cold one with high winds and cloudy skies all day and temps that stayed in the mid 50's.

My partner was none other that "Big Fish" Bob Hanson. I had found a few fish pre-fishing in the lower delta and so our plan was to make the run there to try our luck. Our first stop was a special ditch in Bay Minnette where I had found them stacked last month and also found a few pre-fishing. Basically our plan was to use worms (any color that maybe resembled a shrimp) and spinner baits and if the cover was right maybe a Bandit mistake crank bait.

We started out by running to the delta and trying our luck in Bay Minette Basin. I immediately caught a short fish and then had one bite the tail off a worm and I thought maybe we had some fish in the area. 15 minutes later Bob caught a short and then not long after a nice keeper. I knew they were not stacked there but thought that maybe we could each scratch out a limit during the day.
It did not happen! Neither of us caught another fish all day and I am not sure either of us even had another hit.
This was the toughest day I have had in a long time.

While we struggled, it seems that several others were having good luck. New comer Pete Mistich, who was fishing with Don Jahnke proceeded to teach everyone a lesson with a spinner bait. He brought in a nice limit of 9.92 lbs to take first place. He also had a really nice fish @ 4.58 lbs for the lunker. Great show Pete..congratulations!! Dave Dyess took 2nd with a limit @ 6.41 lbs. I am sure he had the finesse worm working hard. Guys you may want to keep an eye on him because he is being consistent and maybe this is his year!
In 3rd place was another new member, Bob Jones with a limit @ 6.20 lbs. Good job!!! Looks like the new folks in the group are making their marks early, guess we better keep an eye on them also. 4th place went to Ken Repine who also had a limit @ 5.52 lbs. Way to go Ken!! Word has it that he had his limit by 9am. WOW!

The winning stringer was caught north of Cliff's on a spinner bait. Almost all of the other fish were caught south of the landing, and almost all were caught on worms. A few fish were caught on crank baits but by far most came on worms, green pumpkin, june bug, and watermelon were the most productive colors.

In spite of the tough day my partner and I had, it was an ok day for most. With the high muddy conditions and the debris in the water we had no mishaps and no one found a sand bar! In all, most had a good a day, and as usual we had a good time at the weigh in joking and teasing with each other. Frank did a good job with the weigh in and things went very smooth and efficient. Well, come to think of it there was one item of note… Frank did launch his boat with the motor-toter still attached, but I guess that's not so bad…maybe. I think he still might get a slammer nomination for his efforts….

Our February tournament will once again be out of Scott's Landing on the Tensaw delta. This is still a great time to load the boat with delta bass and have a lot of fun. Even though they tend to be smaller than fish upriver, 25-30 fish is not uncommon this time of the year and occasionally you can find a 3-4 lb fish. Make you plans to attend the meeting and fish the tournament as we will not return to the delta for a while with our tournaments.

Until next time….Keep your Hooks Sharp!

John
