TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Seminole

March 20/21, 2010

Seminole Lodge

March took the Hawg Hunters to Lake Seminole for some hopefully great springtime fishing. 17 members and 1 guest attended.
The lake level was near normal pool. Surface temps ranged from about 54-67 depending on the time of day and where you were.
Water color ranged from very muddy to very clear, again depending on where you chose to fish. Saturday brought partly cloudy skies and mild temps with little wind while Sunday brought rain and high winds.

My partner for the weekend was Bob Jones. We talked over fishing strategies and decided to try to find staging fish in the Flint River. The Flint turned out to be high and muddy red with visibility less than 6 inches. Even with the dirty water we found fish on a small bank that were good quality. We fished both days in the same area going around and over again and again. We fished in less than 3 feet of water the entire weekend and threw lipless crank baits and junebug worms.

On Saturday I immediately started catching fish and in fact caught the first 6. Then Bob caught the next 7 and then I caught the next 2. It was really funny the way it happened. By the way, we never caught a short fish all weekend! By the end of the day each of us had our limit and had culled a couple.

At the Saturday weigh in, I was in 1st place with 13.39 lbs. Ken Repine was in 2nd place with 12.62 lbs. Jere Jaillite was in 3rd place with12.56 lbs, and Bob Jones was in 4th with 10.17 lbs. Big fish for Saturday was caught by Jeff Weaver @ 5.11 lbs. Even though not everyone had a limit all caught fish and there were many stories of the "big one" that got away!

After the weigh in we all left for the motel. Several of the guys had recently returned from a trip to Mexico and they brought back a lot of fillets and we had a great fish fry. Dave Dyess organized it and did a terrific job. A special thanks to all who furnished the fish and helped in the preparation and clean up. Needless to say we all had our fill with food that evening. As a special treat Jeff's Weaver's wife, Brenda, made enough brownies to feed an army and wow! Were they good!! A special "thank you"..Brenda!! With full bellies and more lies and stories than you could remember everyone retired for the evening.

Sunday morning we awoke to rain and windy conditions. Not daunted by the weather, the Hawgs prepared for another day on the water. Bob and I felt like our fish would still be in the same area so we made the long run up the Flint again. Today it was Bob who caught the first fish. We continued with the lipless baits and eventually we found a few fish. Bob really showed his skills and brought in 4 nice fish including a 4.86 beauty which turned out to be the lunker for Sunday. I could only hook up with jack fish and grinnel. Bob did not let up and eventually caught 4 nice keepers and I managed to scrape out 2.
We had a great weekend fishing together and really had a lot of fun.

At the weigh in Bob Jones took the honors with a total of 20.51 lbs to get the win and also he had lunker (4.86) for Sunday.
2nd place went to Buddy Yates who came charging back with a nice bag on Sunday giving him a weekend total of 18.66 lbs.
John Buck took 3rd place with18.07 lbs and Jere Jailitte took 4th with 17.27 lbs. Congratulations to all who were there for making this a wonderful tournament. A special thanks again for those who helped in any way with the fish fry and also to those who helped with the weigh in. Frank and Jeff and Kevin did a great job there and to the others who pitched in to help, to all "great job"!!

Fish were caught on a variety of lures with lipless crank baits taking many fish, flukes worked well for some, and others caught fish on shallow running crank baits, worms and lizards and even some on spinner baits. Most popular colors in worms and lizards were green pumpkin and junebug.

We had a guest fishing with us, Roger Helm, and he is a super nice guy and we all enjoyed him fishing with us.
Hope to see you again soon Roger!

A special note to Jeff Weaver…Jeff, last month getting a hook in your chin (chinhook) may not have been your fault, but crawling under a truck, in the rain, on the muddy ground, in the dark, groping under the bumper to find a non-existent hidden key because you locked yourself out of your truck and didn't remember that you are a subscriber to On Star…and then leaving your tackle bag on the dock at blast-off…well, that may qualify as a "slammer nomination".

Once again to all the members, I just want to say I hope you had as much fun as I did this weekend, and I appreciate all of you and the good sportsmen that you are and the fun and friendship that you all demonstrate. To those who were unable to attend, you missed a good one. Next month is another 2 day event and we will be at Lake Martin. Yes, we'll have another get together on Saturday night but this time it will be a chicken dinner and we'll have a great time again, so make your plans to attend. Lake Martin is a wonderful lake to fish and it offers a variety of styles to fish and if you like to catch spots then you will enjoy this lake. If you have not fished it before, you will see really different features than you see in our area. Little or no grass, lots of lay downs, rocks, deep water, clear water and even "clearer" water, and hopefully lots of fish! It's a beautiful setting regardless.

Special note to remember!!... THE MEETING IS APRIL 14 AND THE TOURNAMENT IS APRIL 17-18. This is a week early because of problems with accommodations so mark your calendars accordingly and make your plans now
to attend and participate in this fun time. See you at the meeting…

Until next time….Keep your Hooks Sharp!
