TOURNAMENT REPORT

Millers Ferry May 22, 2010
Ellis Landing

We had our monthly tournament at Miler's Ferry on the Alabama River. We launched from Ellis landing. On Friday most went early to pre-fish. That evening was filled with stories of all the fish that had been found and caught. It seemed that everyone no matter whether they fished up or down found fish. Expectations were very high to say the least. However Mother Nature had another plan for us. Later that evening a very strong line of thunderstorms came through preceding a weak cool front. Saturday morning found us with high blue bird skies and then the corps decided not to pull water. Fun, Fun, Fun, HOT! HOT! HOT! The water temps were in the mid to upper 70's and the color had a good stain. It seemed to me that the further you went upstream the better the river color was. Most creeks and lakes had a very heavy stain.

My partner for the tournament was Frank Kelly and we had a really good time fishing. Like everyone else we found many fish on practice day and good quality too. But, on Saturday in the tournament we could not find the quality fish. We caught many many short fish but only managed a few small keepers each. We decided to fish the upper areas of the lake mostly from Bogue Chitto Creek up and then we finished down in Ladel Slough and on a ledge bank above Ellis.

We caught most of our fish on green pumpkin worms and a few on floating frogs (mainly horny toads). On practice day we found fish on frogs and spinner baits and on worms but On Saturday the keeper fish just would not cooperate for us. At least we had an enjoyable day visiting and telling stories because the fishing was terrible for us. We each weighed in less than 4 lbs of fish!!!

At the weigh in Lee Brannon took the honors with a limit of fish @ 9.70 lbs. Lee also won the lunker with a 3.31 lb large mouth. And it really was his day because he also won the golf ball draw!! Congratulations Lee …great job!!! Nailing down the 2nd spot was Tony Boyette who showed up with a limit at 8.78 lbs. Third place went to Mack Cramer with a limit weighing 6.95 lbs. Dave Bock took 4th place with a limit weighing 6.56 lbs. Congratulation to the top 4. It was a really tough day and you guys made the best of it. Almost all of the fish were caught on soft plastics with green pumpkin worms being the number one choice of color.

Our next tournament will be on the beautiful Escambia River on June 19. This will be the first of our "summer" tournaments, and they end at 2 PM. Make your plans to attend. This one is close by and will not cost an "arm and leg" to fish so make your plans now. Remember that in the hot weather it is especially necessary to keep your livewells running all day, and do what is necessary to keep the fish alive and healthy for release. Also make sure to drink plenty of fluids and not get yourself in a bad way with the heat.

Until next time…Keep your hooks sharp!!!
