TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Jordan
October 23-24, 2010
Boat Ramp Landing

I want to start this report different from usual and tell you about a great experience I had a couple of weeks back. I was fortunate to get to go to Lake Weis near Centre, Alabama and fish a tournament there. While I had great luck fishing, it did not compare to the wonderful time I had due to the local hosts who made the stay great. I stayed at Bay Springs Motel and Campground. The owners Rickey and Terri Hyatt were truly superb. The place was nice and clean and comfortable and the friendly staff is outstanding.
If you ever wish to go up to Weis for a weekend this is the place to stay. I certainly give them a recommendation of the highest order. Check the out at their website http://www.bayspringsmotelandcampground.com Weis is only about 5 hours drive from Pensacola and most of it is Interstate. Give it consideration for your weekend outing. It is also known as the "Capital of Crappie Fishing".

The Hawg Hunters held their annual Fish-off tournament at Lake Jordan, near Wetumpka, Alabama. Our group had done well there in past tournaments and we were looking forward to this one with much excitement. My partner for the tournament was Brian Nall. Brian is new to the club and we had never fished together. I have known him for a few years and was looking forward to fishing with him. We decided to try our luck up in the river because of a small cool front and high blue skies. The water was clear but still warm (74-75). Also the high blues brought steady winds as each day progressed. We located some active fish in short order during practice on buzz bait and a few on worms but not the numbers or size we had hoped for. There were shad balls in the creek mouths but the schooling had not really started yet. Later in the practice day we noticed a local who was throwing a crawfish crankbait and catching some fish so we decided to have that on our poles too. When we tried it we caught fish and Brian tried a crawfish jig and caught a keeper also. We figured that we at least had a little plan for success.

On tournament day we could not buy a bite on the buzz bait and it was even tougher fishing than the day before. I did manage 4 small keepers on a brown/orange crankbait. Brian caught a nice spot maybe about 3 lbs on a crawfish crankbait and later he caught a nice 2+ spot on a shakey head worm. That was it for us on day one…so very tough.

At the scales there were many long faces and few fish to show. Taking the lead for day one was Dave Dyess who had a nice limit for 11.93 lbs. 2nd was Jeff Weaver with 11.26, 3rd - Tony Boyette @ 8.59, 4th -Mack Cramer @ 8.41, 5th -Frank Kelly @8.17, 6th - Buddy Yates @ 7.15, 7th - Dan Nash @ 6.54, 8th - Jere Jailitte @ 6.18, 9th Brian Nall @ 5.23, and 10th was Lee Brannon @3.85. Big fish for the first day was caught by Tony Boyette @ 3.79 lbs. These were very small weights compared with past visits to Lake Jordan. Fish were caught on a variety of lures with the most productive being Chug Bugs, worms, and crank baits.

Back at the hotel we all enjoyed a great meal of fried chicken, baked beans, and potato salad. Everyone had a good time, and as usual, stories and lies were rampant. Once again Jeff's lovely wife, Brenda provided us with a delicious dessert. This time she sent a large plate of home made chocolate chip cookies, and they were promptly devoured. Thank you so much Brenda! Also, thank all who had a hand in getting all the "fixings" together for the meal and the clean up afterward. It is easy to sit back and just show up and enjoy the meals, but I know that it takes extra times and effort to organize and get everything together for these special times on the 2 day tournaments. So, a special "Thank You" to Dave Dyess for your extra efforts in our 2 day tournaments.
As day 2 arrived, Brian and I decided to try something totally different from the day before and fish the lower end of the lake. We started out on a point on the west bank. Immediately I caught four keepers on a shakey head. Then Brian caught a nice fish off a brush top on worm also. Then we hit about 3 hours with nothing! Finally, I got a 5th keeper on a grass line in the mid-lake area. We each caught a couple of others but no keepers.

At the final weigh-in, there were many long faces as most did not do so well as they had the day before. However, Dave Dyess did not slow down and he took the win with a total weight of 20.13 lbs. Congratulations Dave on a great win. In 2nd place was Jeff Weaver (18.33), 3rd place Tony Boyette (13.19), 4th place Mack Cramer (12.74), 5TH place, Dan Nash (12.39), 6th place John Buck (11.19), 7th place Frank Kelly (10.08), 8th place Lee Brannon (9.53), 9th place Bill Myrick ( 9.03), and 10th place Brian Nall (7.70). The lunker for the 2n day was caught by Dave Dyess @ 3.85 lbs.

A very special "Congratulations should be given to Jeff Weaver for winning "Fisherman of the Year". Jeff, you never let up and kept fishing hard all year and really did a great job. Congratulations for the rest of the "Top Six" fishermen. I am not sure of the order but I think they are Lee Brannon, John Buck, Mack Cramer, Buddy Yates, and Dave Bock. If I missed anyone or got the order incorrect,
I apologize.

November starts our new tournament season so now is the time to get started and get off to a good start by fishing the next tournament. It will be on the Mobile Delta out of Steele Creek. Also do not miss the banquet which will be November 19, at the Angus Steak House. I will be out of town and unable to fish the tournament and attend the banquet (deer hunting in Nebraska), but always the banquet is fun and enjoyable, and November is certainly a good month for the delta areas so be sure to try to do both.

Until next time….Keep your Hooks Sharp!

John
