TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lay Lake
September 18-19, 2010
Lower Dam Landing

The Hawg Hunters held the September tournament on Lay Lake. Lay is located half way between Birmingham and Montgomery. It is formed by the Alabama Power Dam on the Coosa River. The weather was pleasant with cool mornings and hot afternoons and high blue skies for the most part. Water temp was near 84-85 and clarity was generally about 2 feet in the lower part of the main lake.

I ended up fishing solo this time because my partner had a medical issue and had to cancel. I found fish in several places on Friday and felt really good about my chances for the tournament. I got off to a bad start on Saturday by losing the fist hit I had but at least I got to see it a couple of times, and it broke my heart to let that 4+ pound large mouth get away. I kept fishing the buzz bait but never got any hook ups and when the sun came up I switch to the pattern I found the day before. I was pitching a shakey head rig in the grass edges and by 10:30 am I put my 23 rd keeper in the boat. The only problem was that they were all the same size about 1 ½ lbs each. I switched to several different places on each side of the lake with the same patters and found immediate success but always the same size fish. About 10:45 am I went to another backup hole to try to catch a couple of larger spots and as luck would have it I caught another 1 ½ lb large mouth on the first cast. Then 2 casts later I caught a nice spot and then another and then they quit. I mean they really quit! From 11:00 am until 3:40 pm I caught only 3 more fish. At least I had a limit and maybe about 7.5 lbs. Not so good for Lay Lake, but I really did catch a lot of keeper fish.

At the scales Brian Nall came in with the best stringer with a limit @8.85 lbs. My little bag was 2nd with 8.54 lbs. Glenn Kittrell was 3rd with a limit @ 8.37 lbs and Frank Kelly was 4th with a limit @8.36lbs. Frank also had the lunker for the day with a nice large mouth @ 4.08 lbs. There were many with in a couple of pounds of the leader so I knew it would be a shoot-out for day 2.

Saturday evening we had our annual "President's Dinner" and the club furnished prime New York Strips (1 lb), tossed salad, and baked potatoes. We had a great time eating so much. Also to add to the good food, Jeff Weaver's wife, Brenda, made a big plate of brownies which we all devoured. THANK YOU Brenda for that special treat!! With a full stomach and lots of fish talk we all retired to the rooms to try to watch the football games if we could stay awake. Also a really big "THANK YOU" to Dave Dyess for his work in putting everything together and getting the steaks etc. Great job Dave!!!

Day 2 started off with no hitches or problems. I ran back to my starting place but soon after arriving there were 2 other boats from other tournaments trying to fish the same 200 yards. I got ticked and left and headed for my 2nd place and found 3 boats there so I just got in line behind them and caught 3 nice keepers. From there I went to the place where I caught the good spots on Saturday and caught a keeper and missed a heavy fish. The bite was really off for me compared to the day before. I ended up my day by fishing the bluff walls on the main lake and managed to catch my 5th keeper for the day about 45 minutes before weigh in.

At the scales, Brian Nall had done it again, and he came in with a nice limit @ 7.59 lbs and enough to give him the win (16.44 lbs). Congratulations Brian, but next time let the guy in the front of the boat catch a few!!!! My limit held up and I finished 2nd with 7.42 lbs. (15.96lbs). 3 rd was Jeff Weaver ("Fisherman of the Year To Be"). He came up with a limit @ 6.66 lbs total (15.33 lbs). 4th place went to Tony Boyette with a limit @ 6.02 lbs. (13.76 lbs.). Lee Brannon (he wrapped up 2nd place for the year) brought the lunker in on Sunday @ 3.63 lbs. Lee, seems like you've caught a lot of lunkers this year!

Overall the fishing was really off compared to the previous tournaments we have had here, but everyone caught fish and had a good time. There were only a few mishaps with equipment but nothing that would warrant a "Slammer" nomination. Rumor has it that there is a strong chance that Jeff Weaver may win more than "Fisherman of the Year".. guess we will have to just wait and see. Possibly a "first" for the Hawg Hunters that FOY also gets the slammer!….just a possibility…..

Our next tournament is at Lake Jordan and will it be 2 tournaments in one. It will be our monthly tournament and also our "fish-off" tournament. It will be a 2 day event and as always we plan to have a good time together. The club will also furnish a chicken dinner for Saturday night. Because it is 2 tournaments in one, you do not have to be fish-off eligible to fish for the monthly tournament. Make your plans to be there. Also the October meeting is a special one because we will elect our new eboard and also vote on constitutional proposals. Make your plans to attend and enjoy the friends, the fellowship, and the fishing with us.

Until next time….Keep your Hooks Sharp!
