TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Jordan
April 16-17, 2011
Lower Dam Landing

The April tournament was held at Lake Jordan, near Montgomery, Alabama. It was a 2 day event and we had 15 members and 1 guest participating. A storm front came through on Friday night and Saturday brought high blue skies and strong winds and cooler temps. Sunday we had clear skies with moderate winds but even cooler temps. The water color was stained with a visibility of about 2-3 feet. Surface temps were in the upper 60's.

My partner for the weekend was Billy Myrick. Billy and I decided to try to find fish on ledges near seawalls in hopes of finding large spotted bass either moving up to spawn or on the ledges in post spawn time. I think maybe we found a few of each. Billy and I both managed to find a limit on Saturday with this pattern fishing shakey head rigs with trick worms. We were also able to find a few fish on grass edges with swim jigs. While we did not catch large numbers of fish our bite was steady and we managed a few quality fish.

At the weigh-in on Saturday Mack Cramer brought a nice limit to the scales to take the day one lead with 12.78 lbs. He also had big fish for the day @ 3.58 lbs. In 2nd place was Lee Brannon with 5 fish @ 11.96 lbs. The 3rd spot went to Frank Dodge with 5 fish @ 11.53 lbs. John Buck was 4th place with 5 fish @ 10.25 lbs. Everyone had fish to weigh and there were 11 limits brought to the scales.

Back at the motel we had a great time with the meal that the club provided. Everyone gathered around and swapped fishing stories and told lies while we gorged ourselves on fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad and rolls. A special thanks to Dave Dyess and the others who helped to put this together. And thanks for those who pitched in and helped to clean up afterwards.

Sunday morning we found cold temps (39) but calm waters for the start of day 2. The water seemed a bit more stained than on Saturday but still it was very clean by the water we are used to see in our area. Billy and I returned to the same seawall pattern and soon we started catching fish again and even a few quality fish again. We were able to find bites but we had to work for them and we did not get the numbers we had on Saturday. We heard storied of others who said they had limits early both days and were in lots of "keeper" fish but we never found that bite.

At the scales for day 2 it was once again Mack Cramer who had the touch as he took 1st place for the tournament with a 2nd day total of 5 fish @ 10.38 lbs and a total weight of 23.16 lbs. Great job Mack!! Lee Brannon took 2nd place with another limit @ 9.63 lbs for a total weight of 21.59 lbs. Better keep an eye on him guys!!!! The 3rd slot went to John Buck. He had a limit again @ 9.72 and also big fish for Sunday @ 3.30lbs and a total of 19.97 lbs. The fourth slot went to Jeff Weaver who brought in a nice bag @ 10.60 lbs for a total of 18.52 lbs. A special thanks to Don Jahnke for the good job with the weigh in and to all who helped to make this tournament a really enjoyable event.

Lake Jordan once again proved to be a great fishery for our April tournament. It is really fun catching those Coussa River Spots.
They are strong and beautiful fish. Overall our tournament was a really big success, and we all had a wonderful time. We had one guest fishing, CJ Scott, and he caught 6 fish also. We enjoyed having you with us CJ and hope you will return. Most fish were caught on shakey head worms, green pumpkin and junebug colors, crankbaits in shad colors, and spinnerbaits in chartreuse and white.

Our next meeting will be May 18, and the tournament will be one day at Miller's Ferry on May 21.
This will be a really good time to fish there and I hope to see you all at the meeting and tournament.

Keep your hooks sharp!!
John
