TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
August 20, 2011
Hubbards's Landing
The Hawg Hunters held their August tournament on the Tensaw River out of Hubbard’s Landing.  We had 19 fishermen participating.  The weather was hot and mostly clear skies with air temps in the mid 90’s by 10 AM.  The water temps started out about 89 but rose to over 93 as the day progressed.  Water color was good for the Tensaw with a visibility of maybe 12-24 inches in most places.  We had a falling tide for the day.

My partner for this tournament was Andy Gunn.  It was the first time Andy and I have had a chance to fish together, and we really had a good time.  I had been pre-fishing the area about 3 times and never found anything good but at least I had eliminated several places.  Anyway, we decided to start in the guts just below Upper Bryant’s landing.  Andy caught a keeper on a buzz bait and soon after I caught a non keeper on a worm.  After about 40 minutes there I had one keeper on a worm and Andy had caught a couple of keepers on a worm.  He had me 3-1!   Finally I managed another but he followed immediately with another keeper on a worm.    Our bite quit about 9:45 and we decided to go hunting .  After a couple of unsuccessful stops we wound up in Rice creek fishing about  ½ mile behind Dave Dyess and Kevin Simmons.  I managed one more keeper, and it was a good fish and that was the last keeper we caught all day

On a special note, it was good to see Neil Springstead again. Neil came down from Andalusia to fish with us and visit. He has a really nice new Nitro and he wanted to show it off . “Really a good looking boat Neil.  Glad you made it down and hope to see you next month at Lay and Mitchell.

At the scales most everyone had a fish or two. Tony Boyett grabbed the win with 5 fish weighing 8.22 lbs. I squeezed 2nd place with 3 fish weighing 7.33 lbs. I also had the lunker @ 4.01 lbs.  Third place went to Mack Cramer. He had 5 fish @ 7.04 lbs.  Lee Brannon took 4th place with 4 fish @ 6.94lbs.

Most of the fish this month were caught on soft plastics of some sort from flukes to floating worms, to texas rigs, plastic craws, and jigs.  A few found crank baits and buzzbaits.  Still the dominant colors are junebug and green pumpkin.

There has been quite a shake-up in the “top 6” fishermen in the club standings in the last 2 months.  Now there are about 7-8 members who can compete for the top six and who can possibly win the “Fisherman of the Year “honors.

Next month is a 2 day tournament at Lay Lake (Sat) and Lake Mitchell (Sun).  We will have a cook out funded by the “special fund”.   We will cook hamburgers and hot dogs and have all the trimmings.  Both of these lakes are great fisheries for that time of the year so make plans to attend the meeting and the tournament.  Until next time …”Keep Your Hooks Sharp!”
