TOURNAMENT REPORT

Escambia River
December 11, 2010
Smith's Landing

With Christmas just around the corner, the Hawg Hunters moved their tournament to the 2nd weekend in the month instead of the 3rd. As it turned out it was really a good call. We have had some of the coldest days and nights lately ever in our part of the country for this time of year. However we really caught it right this time. With morning lows hovering near 45 and the highs going up to 62. We had clear to partly cloudy skies and the winds were moderate most of the day. The water was really nice in the main river and in many lakes the water was really super clear (too clear in some).
But even with these most tolerant conditions, we were still fishing the Escambia River!!

Jere Jailite and I drew out as partners, and as luck would have it we both were thinking on the same places and strategies for the day. I must admit it was a cold ride early as Jere wasted no time in getting us up river to our fishing hole. Anyway in short order we stopped at a creek on White's River and started working our way to the back. The water was beautiful and soon we both were able to catch a couple of short fish on a greenpumpkin worm. We woked back as far as we could go until the way was blocked by fallen trees and then worked back out. By the time we got back to the main river it was 10 AM and we each had 3 keepers and several short fish (all on green pumpkin worms). We decided to just make the trip over again and see if we could each get a limit and then maybe go somewhere and try to cull up. Well that's when they stopped biting and we went nearly 3 hours without even a dink. Jere eventually managed a 4th keeper but I could only tap 3 keepers for my day. We had a very enjoyable day and talked over everything in the book and just relaxed and enjoyed our day as we drowned plastic worms.

At the weigh-in 15 of the 16 fishermen had fish for their efforts. There were many stories of short fish but no one really had a decent bag but Lee Brannon. Seems Lee "accidentally" stumbled on to a small gold mine of nice fish in a creek. ("Where I've never been before. Never even seen it!") Anyway he had the only limit for the tournament and they weighed 8.87 lbs. Congratulations Lee.
You are off to a great start this year! 2nd Place went to Jeff Weaver with 6 fish @ 6.94. Hey Jeff you can take your foot off our throats now and give some of us a chance!!! Wow he kicked butt last year, all year, and now he's started again!!!
Third place went to Buddy Yates with 3 fish @ 5.08. Buddy you really edged me out this time!!
I managed to take 4th with 3 fish @ 5.07.

Most fish were reportedly caught on plastic worms, mainly greenpumpkin and junebug. A few bit spinners and cranks.
Fish were caught both up and down river in the sawgrass but as usual the larger ones came from up river.

Our next tournament will be January 22, out of Scott's Landing on the Tensaw delta.
It's a great time of the year to fish there so make your plans to attend.

As this year ends, I want to take the time to say "Thank You" to all the members of the Hawg Hunters for making this group such a great club to fish with, also to the eboard members, old and new, for your efforts in running the club so well. And, of course and certainly not least….Jim Bailey for his efforts and time consuming work for so long in keeping our website in such good shape,
and for allowing me the opportunity to ramble here each month.

TO ALL, I WISH YOU A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A SAFE AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!

John
