TOURNAMENT REPORT

Fish River
February 19, 2011
Hwy 98 Bridge

The Hawg Hunters held their February tournament on Fish River (a small coastal river near Foley, Al). The mild temps brought a heavy morning fog, but by 8 am the skies were clear to partly cloudy, and yes by noon it was hot. Water in the lower river was stained from the nasty incoming tide pushing in bay water from Week's Bay. The back ends of the creeks in the lower river were clear and from mid-river on up was very clear in both main river and in creeks. Water surface temps ranged from about 60 early up to about 65 at mid-day in the sun.

We had 17 members and 1 guest fishing this month. My partner for the tournament was Glenn Kittrell. Our plan was to fish the grass in and around the creeks in the lower river then when the fog lifted go up river and fish small bays off the main river.

The first canal we entered was very dirty, and we only got one hit and soon we left it for better looking water. The second stop took us to a creek that had much prettier water. We saw several other Hawg Hunter boats fishing in the creek also, and we just kept going back until we were no longer seeing any others. We started fishing any cover we could find and soon I caught a short fish and then a nice keeper. I guess that keeper woke up my partner because the proceeded to give me a lesson on how to catch fish on a junebug trick worm. He started catching keepers, and I could only manage shorts. After each fish he would bite the trick worm down a little more, and he kept catching fish on that worm until it was little more than a grub. Now I can be slow to change but not totally stupid. So,
I switched to a junebug trick worm, but still could not get the bite, so I bit the worm down and switched from a 1/8 wt to a 3/16, the same as Glen, and started to play catch-up. We caught fish all day both in the lower creeks and in the bays and the main river up stream also. Both of us managed a limit, and we culled 4 keepers each. We really had a fun day and probably caught a total of 30-35 fish between the two of us.

At the weigh-in everyone had fish to show. There were not any "also fished". This was a really good tournament for us on Fish River. Tony Boyette took first place with a limit weighing 10.04 lbs. Great job Tony!! Dave Bock took 2nd place with a limit weighing 9.40 lbs. He also had the lunker at 4.05 lbs. Great fish Dave!!! Third place went to Mack Cramer. He had a limit @ 7.94 lbs. John Buck took 4th with a limit @ 7.62 lbs. Almost all the fish were caught on soft plastics, mainly trick worms, in green pumpkin and junebug colors. A few fish were also caught on crankbaits. Limits were caught in the lower delta, mid river, and above the hwy 32 bridge.
I think most fish were caught in creeks, but many were also caught in the main river.

This was the best tournament we have ever had at Fish River and it is always fun when everyone catches fish. We weighed in over
100 lbs of fish and we had 9 limits brought to the scales. Also just for the record, Frank Kelly did NOT have to call Seatow this month. Frank (that's "one in a row"). I just hope you can keep your streak alive next month.

Seriously, we had no mishaps even with the dense fog, and even though it is still early in the year, Frank really does have a choke hold on the "SLAMMER AWARD". It was also good to see some members fishing again that have missed several of our last tournaments, and I want to say we enjoyed having Andy Gunn fish with us as a guest. I hope you enjoyed the day Andy.

Next month we fish Lake Seminole, and it is a 2 day tournament. Last year we caught a lot of fish and really had a good time.
(We even can still remember Jeff crawling in the mud under his truck, looking for is keys during a rain storm.)
We will also have a cook-out at this tournament for Saturday night. If you haven't fished Seminole this time of the year …
well it can be loads of fun with big fish. Make your plans to attend the meeting and the tournament.
Until next time………………

Keep your hooks sharp!!
