TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
January 22, 2011
Scott's Landing

Did I hear the words COLD, ICE, FREEZING, and FISHING? Well the Hawg Hunters found all those words appropriate for their January tournament. We fished out of Scott's Landing on the Mobile causeway. It was 24 degrees at the blast-off and for the first hour or two everyone had to dip rod tips in the water to thaw the ice from the eyes. The wind was moderate, about 10 mph from the NW, and the skies were clear. The water surface temp was in the low 40's and rose during the day to the upper 40's.
Clarity was bout 6 inches to a foot in the lower delta and clearer in the back of creeks.

Buddy Yates and I drew out as partners and as luck would have it we both wanted to fish the same basic area. Buddy and I had never fished together, but I have admired his consistency since he joined the club and was really looking forward to fishing with him.
We had a great day fishing together and even found a few fish. Early on we made a stop in a hole I like in Bay Minette and Buddy caught 2 small keepers there. From there we went to Oak Bayou, just off the Raft River. We found a few fish on crank baits but it was slow tough fishing. We both felt that the fish would bite better when the sun warmed the surface and we were right about that. Although we caught scattered fish during the morning, we really found a good bite later in the day. Buddy really gave me a lesson as he caught his limit and even culled 5 keepers but I could only manage to put 4 keepers in the boat. I had my chances but could not keep them on the hook. At the end of the day we had caught a lot of fish between the 2 of us and most importantly we had a fun day fishing. I look forward to the opportunity to fish with him again.

At the scales almost everyone had fish for their efforts even if some had only one. Mac Cramer took first place honors with a limit weighing 8.79 lbs. He said he caught most of his fish on worms and spinner baits. Second place went to Jeff Weaver. He had a limit @ 7.99 lbs. Hey guys somebody better step up and put some brakes on this guy. Seems like he is in the top 3 every month now for a year or so. I think Jeff caught his fish on a worm. Good job Jeff!! Buddy Yates took third place with his limit @ 7.91 lbs. Buddy caught his fish on a crank bait. Fourth place went to Dave Dyess. He caught his fish on worms. He had a limit @ 6.85 lbs. John Buck squeaked out the lunker @ 2.39 lbs.

There were 2 mishaps that I know of this weekend, and both involved the same thing "running where you should not run your boat". It seems that Dave Bock missed his turn into Yancey Bayou going to Bay Minette and just figured he could find another cut-thru about a mile north! Heheh… ahh Dave… that is nothing but a huge mud flat filled with stumps…oh yeah you know that now huh! Do not worry. A familiar face has already outdone your effort to win the Slammer.

Everyone knows about the sand bars near and around the mouth of Game Warden ditch, but Frank Kelly decided that he could make a new channel. He gave it a valiant effort but did not succeed. Luckily, another guy came by and offered to go get a bigger boat
and pull him off. But when he returned he could not budge the big Ranger from the mud. So in desperation, Frank called Daphne Search and Rescue, and they responded but could not move him either. In a last ditch effort Frank called "Sea Tow" and they responded with a small tug boat. However by the time (1 hour) they arrived the tide had fallen and there was no water within 6 feet of Frank's boat. He was literally "high and dry". After some doings they managed to free his boat and get him in the water again. But not without a price!!! $$$ Needless to say, Frank, I hope you will remember that sand bar. On a really thankful note, there were no injuries to anyone other than prides and pocket book in either mishap. I guess there will be plenty of banter and teasing for a while over this. Maybe we should nickname Dave "Wide Right" and Frank "Wide Left" …mmm..just wondering here…maybe it would be fitting to pair the two of them together next month….just a thought…

Our next tournament is on Fish River (and there are sand bars there also), near Foley, Alabama. Make you plans to attend the meeting and fish the tournament cause this little river can really live up to its name sometimes.
Until next time be safe and keep your hooks sharp!
