The Hog Hunters tournament was held out of Cliff's Landing on the Tensaw River. We had 18 members fishing.
The weather was hot and we had mostly clear skies for the day. We had
an in-coming tide for the day and the southerly breezes really made the
water come in hard and also provided some air movement to relieve the
heat a bit.
Air temps reached about 95 and the water temp was 87-88 most of the day.
My partner for the day was Kevin Simmons. Kevin is a really great guy to fish with, and he is also a good fisherman.
We decided to spend our time in Mifflin Lake, where I had found some nice fish a few days prior to the tournament.
As luck would have it, they were not there on tournament day. I managed
one nice keeper on a buzz bait early and then another keeper on a worm.
Kevin managed 2 keepers also, both on worms. We both had numerous small
fish and many, many bites.
The bite was soft mostly and you could only feel weight on the line. So
many times we set the hook only to get a piece of worm back. We tried
to allow them to take it longer, but even that did not always work. We
tried to change the size of the worm but only got bit with consistency
on trick worms, mainly in green pumpkin color. Even though we did not
place, we both had plenty of bites and action to keep us on our toes
all day. Only problem was that everything was "short" Oh well that's
fishing.
At the weigh-in, Jeff Weaver
had a very nice bag of fish to get the win with 5 fish @ 8.12 lbs. I
think its beginning to sound like a broken record with Jeff. Seems he
is in the top 3 every month. Great job Jeff, hope you can keep it going!
Jim Bailey Sr, (Jeff's partner) grabbed the 2nd place spot with the
only other limit @ 6.57 lbs. Jim, it was good to see you back fishing
again. Dave Bock took 3rd place with 3 nice fish @ 5.34 lbs, and also
he had the lunker @ 2.67 lbs. Good job to you Dave.
It seems like you are on a roll too. In the 4th spot was Jere Jaillite. He had 4 fish @ 5.05 lbs. Congratulations to you!
Most of the fish were caught on a variety of soft plastics. The main colors were the usual junebug and green pumpkin.
A few guys reported a few early bites on top water lures. Those who
went down found fish on grass and those who went up found fish mostly
on wood…no surprise there. Overall everyone kept their fish well, and
we only had 3 dead fish.
I appreciate the extra effort everyone makes to keep the fish alive and well.
Next month we fish Escambia River, and I hope that all can make the tournament.
It is close to home and also a short day (2 PM weigh-in). Please make plans to attend the meeting and fish the tournament.
See ya at the meeting!
Until next time …Keep your hooks sharp!
