TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
August 18, 2012
Hubbard's Landing

The Hawg Hunters held their August tournament out of Hubbard’s Landing on the Tensaw River.  We had 21 members fishing and no guests.  The weather had been really hot but tournament day was not as hot for august in our area, it was really a pleasant day.  The water temps were in the upper 80’s and we had an incoming tide most of the day.  The clarity ranged from a moderate stain to a heavy stain or muddy depending on where you fished.

I fished with Buddy Yates on this trip and we decided to fish in the Briar Lake area.  We fished cut-thoroughs and creek mostly and a few pockets off the main lake area.  On our first stop Buddy got 2 small keepers on a fluke and I never got a bite.  I threw buzz baits, worms and craws but not even a grinnel nor a bluegill would bite.  We fished hard all day and Buddy stayed with his fluke and he did finally catch a limit.  I did catch one small keeper about midday.  We each caught several short bass but the fishing was really tough.  Most of our fish came off cypress trees off the bank.  We had a good time fishing together telling stories and lies and even though it was hot and the fishing was slow the day passed fairly fast.  Buddy did teach me a lesson on fishing flukes.

At the scales we found that the fishing was tough for all the others too.  Buddy did manage to get 1st place with his limit weighing 6.18 lbs. Dave Dyess was 2nd with 4 fish @4.93 lbs. He also had the lunker @ 2.49 lbs.    Third place went to Mack Cramer. He had 2 fish @ 3.75 lbs.  The 4th spot went to Tony Boyette with 3 fish @ 3.26 lbs.   Congratulations to the guys who did find a few.  August is usually tough in this area and it was tough for us today as a club.  There were a total of 34 fish @ 40.05 lbs.  I will be happy when we get fall temps and the bite improves.  Most fish were caught on soft plastics worms, lizzards, and flukes.  Colors varied lots but most were darker shades.

This month the standings did get a bit tighter and the race for the “top six” spots are not guaranteed.  Nest month we will fish on the Alabama River out of Swift Creek near Atauga, Alabama.  This is a great area for September and we should catch lots of fish there.  It is loaded with good spotted bass as well as nice largemouths.  It will be a 2 day tournament so make your plans now.  The club will provide a meal on Saturday night and those times are always lots of fun.  I will miss this tournament because of family commitments out of town but I will be thinking about you guys catching those good spots.  Also remember that August 31, your Alabama fishing license expires.  For sure Alabama Game and Fish  Officers will be checking lots during September, so do not forget.

Until next time ..keep your hooks sharp!
