TOURNAMENT REPORT

Blackwater River
July 21, 2012
Carpenter's Park

Our July tournament was held out of Carpenters Park on the Blackwater River.  We had 22 members fishing.  The weather was hot but mostly cloudy with light breezes which made the day tolerable.  The river was in good shape and reasonably clear, and most lakes and backwaters were clear also.  Surface temps were in the mid to upper 80’s depending on where you fished.  We had an in coming tide for most of the day.

Ron Bridges and I were partners this month.  We decided to fish  above the landing area in Cooper’s Basin and in a few cuts above there.  As soon as we got started Ron had a couple of good strikes on a buzzbait but did not hook up.  I eventually managed a keeper off a grass bed in about 6 feet of water on a black worm.   Later I caught one more small keeper off grass on a horny toad.   That was it for us.  We did catch maybe 3-4 non-keepers through out the day but it was really tough fishing.

At the scales 17 guys had fish to weigh.  Almost all were small and most only had 1-2 fish.  We did have 2 limits weighed in.  Tony Boyette took first place with 5 fish @ 5.02 lbs.  2nd Place went to Kevin Simmons with 5 fish @ 4.58 lbs.  Mack Cramer had 3rd place with 4 fish @ 4.39 lbs. and Billy Myrick took 4th place with 4 fish @ 3.66 lbs.  Bob Jones caught the lunker @ 3.34 lbs.  Congratulations on the top 4 for finding a few fish.  It was a tough day.

Most fish were caught below the hwy 90 bridge using buzz baits early and then dark colored worms and DOA shrimp.  This time of year is always tough locally and this month proved no different from past history.  There are always a few fish to be caught but until we can get cooler weather it will stay tough in our area.  One thing that usually helps is the influx of menhaden up the rivers in late summer and the bass do feed on the smaller menhaden.  When that starts usually you can catch a few early and late in the day.

I would like to take a second to say “good bye” to CJ Scott.  CJ is being assigned to a base near St. Louis and this was his last tournament with us.  CJ..if you are in this area ever please give me a call and we will wet a hook.  We all wish you the best in your new assignment.

Our next tournament will be August 18, out of Hubbard’s Landing on the Tensaw River.  This will be our last “short-day” tournament for the year.  Make your plans to attend the meeting and also fish the tournament.  Be safe in the heat and drink lots of fluids when on the water.

Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
