TOURNAMENT REPORT

Miller's Ferry
November 19, 2011
Ellis Landing

The first tournament of the year was held at Miller’s Ferry.  We had 20 members and 1 guest fishing.  The weather was cool and mostly cloudy and windy, and we had some occasional rain.  Water temp was around 60 all day.  The clarity was good in pockets and in the lower parts of the lake.  In some creeks and some places up river it was stained.

I drew out with Jeff Weaver for this tournament.  We decided to go to a favorite spot of mine down river that I call “blue canoe”.  We found fish there but the bite was very subtle and slow.  However Jeff did catch a limit there and I could only catch short fish.  Around noon we left and went to another spot I liked near the dam.  I managed to catch 2 keepers there and Jeff caught 3 keepers and culled one fish.  We then went up river to another cut bank and I managed one more keeper and that was our day.  In blue canoe we caught all of our fish on worms (junebug, green pumpkin, black/blue).  Near the dam we caught them on chartreuse crank baits.

At the weigh in most guys had fish to weigh.  Bob Jones took 1st place with 5 fish @ 9.49 lbs.  Really nice bag Bob!!  2nd place was Billy Myrick with 5 fish @ 8.73 lbs.  Good job!!  3rd place went to Jeff Weaver with 5 fish @ 7.80. (He really kicked my butt!).  There was a tie for 4th place with Mack Cramer and Steve Meadows both weighing in 5 fish @ 7.65 lbs.  Most fish were caught on crank baits and plastic worms. The lunker was caught by Don Jahnke.  I do not know the weight but I think it was a bit over 4 lbs.  Really a pretty fish!

There was only one mishap that I am aware of and that was Mack Cramer who left his boat for a nature call and it drifted away.  Thankfully there was another tournament boat nearby and they graciously retrieved the drifting boat and return it to him.

This was a really nice turn out for our first tournament of the season.  I hope we can continue with the great participation.  Next month we have our tournament and meeting early because of Christmas.  Be sure to check the website and get the details.  We are fishing Perdido River so the travel will be very short.  Hope to see you all at the meeting. Until next time…

Keep your hooks sharp!
