TOURNAMENT REPORT

Alabama River
September 22 & 23, 2012
Swift Creek Landing

Once again your authoritative angler and wizard of words has seen fit to take a sabbatical and leave the writing to me.  Have no fear thought, John will return next month to enlighten and entertain you. In the meantime let’s press on with the September report.

Our September tournament was held out of Swift Creek on the Alabama River near Prattville, Alabama.  18 Intrepid Hawg Hunters went north for what we all hoped would be an outstanding tournament.  The weather tried to cooperate with us with temperatures ranging from the low sixties in the morning to mid-eighty’s in the afternoon.  Water levels and clarity were good.  The only thing missing were the fish.  Unfortunately, that was pretty much the story of the week-end.

At blast-off on Saturday morning, my partner, Glenn Kittrell, and I headed to a creek that we had pre-fished on Friday.  While we had not established a solid pattern, we still felt confident that we could and would be able to pull out a few fish.  After putting the first keeper in the boat, I felt good about at least having a golf ball fish.  About this time I noticed that Glenn had put on the most God awful looking worm I had ever seen.  Not being one to let a situation like this go by unnoticed, I felt compelled to make a few choice remarks about the worm, and may have pointed a finger or two and giggled a little.  After all I had a keeper in the boat and Glenn had none.  One hour later, when Glenn had three keepers and I still only had one, I felt the time had come to re-evaluate my first impression, and maybe adjust my opinion of Glenn’s worms?  Glenn, always the gentleman, offered me one of his secret baits, but I wasn’t able to get anything to take it.  Since Glenn only had one small bag of these worms his offer was really a very generous one.  About one o’clock we left our first creek with three fish apiece in the boat and headed for hole number two.  Glenn quickly put two more keepers in the boat to fill out his limit, while I was only able to find one addition keeper (on a Glenn worm).  At weigh-in Glenn had one of two limits which was good enough for third place for the day.  Tony Boyett had the other limit and sat in first place followed by Lee Brannon in second and Buddy Yates in forth.  My four fish put me in fifth and still in the hunt.  Buddy also found the little yellow golf ball to pick up a cool eighty dollars.  On a sad note, Wal-Mart in Prattville, messed up our order for chicken and we weren’t able to have our regular picnic in the park.  This was a major disappointment as we all look forward to these get togethers.  As for eating chicken, I guess I wasn’t all that hungry for bird after Glenn spoon fed me a large helping of crow earlier in the day.

Sunday morning arrived way too early, but that didn’t stop Glenn and I blasting our way back to our first creek.  Glenn had reloaded with his secret worm at Bass Pro and I have to admit that there were a few of the critters in my tackle bag also. We started the day right where we left off on Saturday and I was able to find 5 keepers before we finally left the creek before noon.  Glenn was only able to boat one keeper.  It was a classic “one day you’re the bug and the next you’re the windshield”.  It’s not that Glenn was doing anything wrong; it’s just that fish would throw the hook, take him into a bush pile, or in some other way evade capture.  As I said before, Glenn is a true gentleman, and he took this turn of events with grace and a good sense of humor.  (He took it much better than I would have.)  At weigh-in I had the only limit, but it was a small one and wasn’t even close to challenging Tony Boyett’s two day total of 9 fish for 15.09 pounds.  My two day limit of 9 fish for 10.61 was a distant second.  Buddy Yates move up to third with 5 fish for 8.90 pounds and Lee Brannon slipped to fourth with 5 fish for 8.74 pounds.  Congratulations Tony on a hard tournament win.

Next month is our fish off at Lay Lake.  Lay generally produces well this time of year so I’m looking forward to seeing a lot of good fish being brought to the scales.  Remember we will have the President’s Dinner at this time so everyone make your plans to attend. Until we meet again, as John would say: “Keep Your Hooks Sharp!”
