The Hawg Hunters fished Lake Jordan, near Montgomery, Alabama for the April tournament. We had 15 members fishing. A strong cold front blew through on Friday before the tournament and we had moderate north winds, cooler temps, and high blue skies both days. The water clarity was good with about 2-3 feet visibility. Air temps were in upper 40’s in mornings and mid 70’s in the afternoons. Dave Dyess was my partner this weekend. We decided to go up and scout on Thursday because of the cold front that was supposed to pass through on Friday. We did find fish on Thursday and the weather man was right about the bad weather on Friday. On Thursday we did find some fish on seawalls and rocky points. On Friday we never even went to the lake because of the high winds and heavy rains. On the first day of the tournament we found fish in some of the places we had check in practice but we never found more than 2 in any spot. After about three places with the same results we settled in on just making a “milk run” to our favorite places. One positive was that we never caught any short fish all weekend. Eventually we did find that for us the most consistent bite came on a junebug trick worm. We had to make it shorter, but not as small as a finesse worm. Dave really gave me a lesson of finessing the bites as he really caught so many more fish than I did. However I did get enough bites that I should have had a limit each day. My execution was not good. We stayed in the mid and upper main lake areas and fish seawalls on both sides of the lake. Late in the day we did find a nice school of fish on a grass-line near a seawall at the mouth of a cove. We were able to get about 4 fish there and misses about 4-5 other bites. We decided that would be our starting point for day 2. At the scales on day one …Dave Dyess was in first place with 5 fish @9.68 lbs. 2nd place was Thom Labelle with 5 fish @ 8.55 lbs. 3rd place was Mack Cramer with 5 fish @ 8.32 lbs and 4th place was Ron Bridges with 5 fish @ 7.81 lbs. The lunker for day 1 was also caught by Ron Bridges @2.84 lbs. That evening the club furnished fried chicken, potato salad, cole slaw and rolls for everyone. We had an enjoyable time eating and telling fishing stories of the day. Special thanks for those who helped in the preparation and clean up. It is really great so see everyone taking an active part in these activities. It is the participation of the membership in general that really makes the club fun. When we blasted off for the second day, Dave and I hurried to the grass line we found late the day before. Immediately we both got bites and missed the fish. Then I caught a nice 3 lb largemouth and before I could even cast again Dave caught a largemouth that was just a bit bigger. We both missed several fish there and then they just quit biting. We left and resumed our “milk run” strategy. As the day progressed Dave managed to dig out another nice limit and I managed only 3 fish. The final results changed a bit and there were lots of fish brought in. Dave Dyess took first place to win the tournament with a total of 18.56 lbs. He also had lunker for day 2 @3.67 lbs. Mack Cramer was 2nd with 16.14 lbs. 3rd place was Brian McCarthy @ 14.78 lbs. 4th place was Dave Bock @ 14.4 lbs. We had a lot of fish caught this weekend on less than good conditions and I think most everyone enjoyed fishing this lake. Most fish were caught on soft plastics in junebug or green pumpkin colors. However many were also caught on spinner baits and white flukes. The fish seemed to bite fairly steady all day both days. Billy Myrick entered his name in nomination for the annual slammer award. Acting as tournament director, he incorrectly weighed Thom Labelle’s fish on Saturday. On Sunday, he forgot that the weigh-in time was at 1 pm and showed up at 2 pm. He also told another boat the incorrect time. As a result, four fishermen were disqualified on Sunday and three of the four guys had nice limits, including Billy, with the largest bag of fish for the weekend! Only time will tell…… Next month we fish Miller’s Ferry on Saturday, May 20. It is a one day tournament and if you plan to stay overnight then you must make your own reservations at the hotel. It should be a great time for the “Ferry” to produce good bags of fish. Make you plans now to attend and participate. As the summer is approaching be sure to plan for the heat and have plenty of fluids available in the boat. Until next time… Keep Your Hooks Sharp! John |
