TOURNAMENT REPORT

PerdidoRiver July 20, 2013
Seminole Landing

Our July tournament was held on the Perdido River. It was the second time this year we have endured this forsaken place. We have had rain for so many days but this small river drains fast usually and it was in very fishable shape. The water was not chocolate but it was stained and dark. Normally this river is a tannic (tea-colored) but clear. Cloudy skies and often violent lightning and heavy rain started our day. After about 7 am we had several rain showers but they were not too bad. I was truly thankful that this was a “short day” tournament scheduled to end at 2pm.

My partner was Carlito Sylvania. It was our first time to fish together and we drew out for his boat. We had a great time fishing and telling stories throughout the day. (Honestly guys, I did not spend the whole day talking about catching smallies in Canada.) We did not catch so many fish, but hey it was Perdido. Carlito did a great job operating the boat . We started in Reeder Lake and we caught 3 small bass and a rat red. Then we went up the Blackwater Creek for a ways and we did not get anything. From there we headed down to fish backwaters near the mouth of the river. I managed another small bass and one keeper and, another rat red. I am not sure if Carlito had any more hits the rest of the day, but he never gave up and fished hard to the end.

At the scales it was pretty sad for everyone except Jere Jaillite. Jere has been very consistent this year and has been in first place for several months now in the club standings. He stayed consistent and brought in a 5 fish limit weighing 7.04 lbs. He accounted for about 40% of the total tournament weight for the whole club. Needless to say he really stretched his lead for the end of the year honors. Congratulations Jere ..Great bag of fish on a really tough day. Thom LaBelle was 2nd with 4.75 lbs . Billy Myrick was 3rd with 3 fish @ 4.34 lbs and he had the lunker @ 2.45lbs. Go Billy! Jeff asked me to mention that he will start charging non-boater fee, and the actual cost will depend on the place of his non-boater. Seems like for last 4 consecutive tournaments his non-boating partner has been in the money. Lee Brannon came to the scales grinning like a possum in a persimmon tree and he had a nice bag of 4 giants for 4.28 lbs and took 4th place.

Perhaps the best thing said of this outing is that hopefully we will not fish this place again for many years. How we wound up with it 2 times in one year is beyond me, once a decade is too often. You know it is bad when 22 fishermen bring in less than 30 lbs of fish in aggregate for the tournament. Perdido has once again lived up to it richly deserved reputation of being a tough and stingy coastal river system for bass. Just a glance at the historical records from the past 35 years in the Hawg Hunters will verify this statement.

As far as I know there were not any mishaps that would qualify anyone for a slammer nomination. Unless somebody does something really stupid, I think Billy Myrick will take the award hands down for his wonderful faux pas at Lake Jordan in April. Hey Billy…there is always hope that somebody will snatch the rug from under you in this, but don’t hold your breath!

Our next tournament will be August 17th at Hubbard’s landing on the Tensaw River. It is the last of our summer (short) tournaments. Make you plans now to attend the meeting and the tournament. Oh yes one last reminder…if you have any proposals for rule changes or constitution amendments, they must be turned in in writing by the end of the August meeting. Until next time …

Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
