TOURNAMENT REPORT

Escambia River
December 15, 2012
Swamphouse Landing

Our December tournament was on the Escambia River out of Swamphouse Landing.  We had 19 members and 3 guests fishing.  The weather was cool but nice and we had a falling tide in the morning.  The water was pretty clear for Escambia with visibility in the main river about 12-18 inches.  We had partly cloudy skies and light winds.

Buddy Yates and I fished together.  Buddy was the boater and he had several stops he wanted to make in the sawgrass areas.  It turned out that 3 of them were the same as what I wanted also.  I started with a worm and he started with a crankbait.  Soon we both started catching small fish and eventually each of us put a couple of keepers in the boat.  We fished the sawgrass areas until about 10 am then went up river near Solutia to try some deep bends and backwater coves but we only managed  maybe 2 small fish for that effort.  We decided to head back to the grass areas and fished around the Hwy 90 bridge until quitting time.  We were both able to squeeze out 4 small keepers for our efforts on both worms and flukes.

At the scales we found that almost everyone caught fish but like us they had to work through lots of small fish even to get a small keeper. Mack Cramer proved that the bigger fish were up river in the swifter waters of Delaney.  Both he and his partner brought really nice fish to the scales.  Mack, following his seeming tradition, brought in a monster  for Escambia  to take the lunker and  the “booray” @ 6.32 lbs. and a total weight of  12.29 lbs to take first place.  He caught them on a spinner bait.  His partner who also threw a spinner bait caught a nice 4 lber also.  But as a guest it did not count in the tournament.  Jeff Weaver took 2nd place with a limit @ 5.15 lbs.  Buddy Yates was 3rd place with 4 fish @ 4.11 lbs.  John Buck was 4th with 4 fish @ 3.68 lbs.

Most of the guys fished the lower river system and caught many fish but most were small.  Most caught fish on a variety of soft plastics in greenpumpkin, junebug, redshad, and watermelon colors.

Our next meeting is January 16th at 7PM.  Make your plans to attend.  As usual for this time of the year there are many fish in the delta areas and usually you can catch numbers but  have to just keep culling through them to get keepers.  Still its fun to catch numbers.    The January tournament will be out of Cliff’s on the Tensaw River. Make your plans to attend the meeting and the tournament.

One more thing I need to mention is a special “THANK YOU” to the out-going E-board for their efforts and success in making the past year a very good year for the Hawg Hunters.  Also, the banquet was great with 41 in attendance.  Kudos also to Jim Bailey Sr. for his work with the website and also to Dave Bock for his help too.  I am looking forward to this year in the Hawg Hunters with lots of excitement for a fun time.  Let’s  keep the Good Times Rollin’ and do our best to make this the best year ever.

Merry Christmas to all and Best Wishes for a Safe and Happy New Year!
