TOURNAMENT REPORT

Perdido River
February 23, 2013
Seminole Landing
The February tournament was held on the Perdido River instead of the Tensaw River due to the flood conditions in the Tensaw system.  We had 19 fishermen participating.  They water conditions were good  and most of the Perdido system was clear or mildly stained  but as the day progressed the water rose and  became more stained.  Surface temps ranged from 60-62 and we had rainy skies all day.

My partner this month was Bill Myrick.  We decided to start our day below Hersh Hammock on a deep bank along the bay shore but the fish were not there.  Next we went to 11 mile creek but it was running hard and muddy. A school of porpoises came in just after we arrived and we decided to leave the area because between the pelicans and porpoises we figured we didn’t have a chance.  We then went to Caney Bayou and in the back we each caught several short fish and Billy did catch a keeper.  From there we went to Alligator Creek and I managed a short fish on a spinner bait and Billy caught another keeper on a black crawfish.  We left alligator to go to Reeder Lake and I caught a keeper going in and then another keeper on the west bank.    We spent the rest of our time in Reeder and I did manage to catch a grinnel.  All of our fish came on black/blue crawfish  (speed craw)  I think I caught a total of 7 and Billy caught 5.  Sad part is we each had only 2 keepers.

At the scales only 11 members had fish to show for their efforts.  There were not any limits weighed in and this is the first time in a while that we did not have at least one limit at the scales.  First place went to Jeremy Burkhart with 3 fish @ 7.64 lbs.  Great job Jeremy!  He caught his fish on spinner baits and worms.  This is his first win in the club but I have a feeling it will not be his last.  Second place went to Buddy Yates with 3 fish @ 7.30 lbs.  Buddy also had the lunker @ 4.40 lbs. It was  a really pretty fish.  He caught his fish on a crankbait.  3rd place was Brian McCarthy with 2 fish @ 5.41.  Brian also had a 4+ lb bass.   He caught his fish on soft plastics.  Better keep an eye on this guy also…because he will be charging hard to get to the top.  Fourth place went to Jeff Weaver with 3 fish @4.77 lbs. Congratulations Jeff.  You just keep staying in the hunt.  I think this season will be a race to the end.  I am guessing that Jeff caught his fish on a worm also.

This was our weakest tournament in a while, but it WAS Perdido and the conditions in all the other places were basically not fishable.  Also I need to say  thank you to Dave Bock for  allowing us to use  the  tent he brought to  cover the weigh in area.  It worked great and really made the weigh-in much easier  out of the rain.  I hope everyone will make plans now for the March tournament.  It will be held on Lake Seminole and in the past several years we have had really great tournaments there.  We will have a cookout on Saturday night at the tournament and that is always lots of fun for all.  By the way…. Someone told me that JereJaillite demonstrated a new dance step while trying to bring his fish to the scales but the water was too heavy in his weigh in bag so he poured some of it out.  Maybe it was not a slammer nomination but it was worth of the look on his face as he quickly tried to recover, hoping no one really saw it.   He did fall flat on his face in the wet mud.  Guess I better not say too much, I could be next …..but,I am glad he was not injured only hurt a bit of pride….

Until next time keep your hooks sharp!!
