REPORT

Once again our
masterful wordsmith is gone. This time
he has taken several other Hawg Hunters with him to the land of the midnight
sun, where ice hockey rules and summer is just a word in the dictionary. Yes folks, John has gone fishing in
Canada. I’m sure with the proper
encouragement we can get John (and his support group) to share, and share, and
share, and share, and share and ssshhhaaarrreee their experiences chasing the
smallies around the Canadian cold water lakes.
In the mean time we mere mortals have been left to enjoy the warm
Alabama weather on the Tensaw River. June marked
the clubs return to the Tensaw River after a weather imposed absence of seven
months. Our earlier scheduled
tournaments had to be relocated due to flood waters and dangerous conditions. Even now the fishing conditions are less than
ideal. Places where we were almost
always able to find clean water were stained to muddy, and because of these
conditions, the water temperatures were several degrees higher than normal. After several trips to the Tensaw River
system over the past several weeks, I decided that my best bet was to run to
one of my favorite creeks. At the
Wednesday night club meeting I was fortunate in drawing Glen Kittrell as my
partner. I’ve fished with Glen on
several occasions and have always enjoyed fishing with him. At the
Saturday morning blast off, Glen and I quickly headed to my creek. I would like to say that we were immediately
successful, but it took about an hour before Glen was able to finally put the
first keeper in the boat. After Glen
broke the ice, fishing picked up and stayed active for the rest of the
day. Many bites, many short fish, and a
number of keepers that just refused to jump into the boat. Probably the most amazing thing about the day
was the number of gators that we observed, some of which would have felt right
a home on lake Seminole. At the weigh-in
I was able to bring a small limit of five fish to the scales, while Glen was
able to produce two keepers. When all
was said and done, Tony Boyett, was able to produce a nice limit of five fish
weighing 7.73 pounds to take top honors. Kevin Simmons was close behind with the third
limit of the day good for 7.27 pounds and second place. Tony’s partner, Rick Howard brought four nice
fish to the scales, which included the 3.48 pound lunker of the day. Rick’s 6.48 pounds was also good enough for
third place, while my little 5.56 pound limit allowed me to finish in fourth
place, which I was very happy with. Most of Glen
and my fish came on worms of the black and black grape variety. Glen did have one fish on a white spinner
bait and lost another keeper at the boat on a spinner bait. Our next
tournament is on the Perdido River and is another of our summer two o’clock
weigh-ins. Until then as John would say “keep your hooks sharp and your lines
tight”. |
