TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Seminole
March 23 & 24, 2013
Seminole Lodge
The March  tournament.
This month the Hawg Hunters fished Lake Seminole near Sneads, Florida.  We had 19 fishermen participating.   The weather was nice until the tournament day.  Even then it was nice for half a day but in the late morning a front moved in bringing gusty winds and lots of rain.  The water temps ranged from about 57 -64 depending on where you fished.  The color in the main lake was stained and in the rivers it was stained also but not really bad.  In many of the lakes off the river one could find clear water and of course in the Fish Pond Drain and Spring Creek areas it is clear always.  On Sunday morning we had a nasty squall that delayed the blast off for an hour but then high blue skies appeared with strong gusty winds and mild temperatures in the mid 70’s.

My partner for the weekend was Ron Bridges. Ron and I fished this lake together a few years back and did really well so we had high hopes that it could happen again.  So much for hopes…  We did find a pattern pre-fishing and thought it would hold.  It did not.   We fished mostly in the lower areas of the Chattahoochee River along grass flats and weed banks.   On Saturday we were able to catch a few fish each but not on the spinner bait pattern we found pre-fishing.  All of our fish both days came on junebug or black worms.  Saturday Ron had 2 keepers and I had 3.  It was tough for us to say the least. Sunday was tougher and Ron did get a bite and I had 3 keepers.  Ron and I had a great time fishing together but it was a tough bite for us.

At the scales there were a lot of nice fish brought in.  I think we had four fish over 4 lbs and maybe four over 5 lbs and the lunker was 6.41 lbs. Don Jahnke found her with a buzz bait early before the rains started.

In first place for day one wasJere Jailitte with 5 fish @13.80 lbs.     In second place for day one was Tony Boyette with 5 fish @ 12.85 lbs.   Third place for day one went to Brian McCarthy with 4 fish @ 11.57 lbs.   And, fourth place was Mack Cramer with 4 fish @ 10.78lbs.  All four of these guys had a fish over 5 lbs.  Everyone had at least one fish to show at the scales.  Fish were caught on a variety of baits ranging from crank baits, to spinner baits to many assorted soft plastics, and even drop shot rigs and rattle traps.  The final tally left several members within striking distance to catch Jere in the second day but if his fish held he would be hard to beat.

Back at the motel we had a great time cooking hamburgers and bratwurst for everyone.  A special thanks to those who were really involved in the activity…..Dave Dyess for getting the stuff together, Jere Jailitte for toting the grill in his truck back and forth, Dave Bock for toting the stuff back also and for  Carlito Silvania and Ron Bridges for cooking.  Thanks to all who did help in cleaning up.  It’s fun when we can do this stuff and have so many pitching in to help make it better for all.  Next month we will do it again at Lake Jordan.  The menu will be fried chicken, potato salad, and baked beans.

Day 2 started with a “bang” as we awoke to a violent lightning and thunderstorm with horizontal rain.  Due this the blast-ff was delayed about an hour.  After the storm passed we had high blue skies mild temps and windy conditions.  At the scales we learned that the bite that some had the day before had vanished. Jere came in with an empty bag, and Tony returned with only one small fish.  In day one, everyone had fish to weigh but day 2 saw 8 fishermen with “zero”.   After all was weighed and counted Brian McCarthy won with a 2 day total of 16.14 lbs.  Mack Cramer was a close second with 16.13 lbs and he had lunker for day 2 @5.35 lbs.  Carlito Silvania finished 3rd with 15.33 lbs and 4th place went to Jeff Weaver @ 15.05 lbs.  This is a great example of how standings can change from one day to the next in 2 day tournaments.

Most of the guys Said they had their best success with soft plastics (worms, lizzards and creature baits in dark colors).  Spinner baits were the other main baits that seemed to have success.  Chartreuse and White were the two most productive colors.

Next month we have another 2 day tournament at Lake Jordan near Wetumpka Alabama.  This is a smaller lake on the Coosa River Chain but it has a great population of spotted bass as well as largemouths.  If the weather continues to warm as spring arrives we should have a great tournament there.   If you like to fish with a shakey head jig, this is the place to do it.  I hope everyone will make plans to fish the tournament and attend the meeting.  Also remember the club will provide the meal on Saturday night at the tournament site.  Thanks again to all who helped with the cook out this month..you really did a great job.
Until next time…Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
