TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
November 17, 2012
Cliff's Landing

Well, I’m back again.  I know that this must be a disappointment for those of you visiting this site looking forward to reading the Bass’n Bards words of wit and wisdom.  Unfortunately John is on a mission to harvest Bambi.  He has left us far behind and has traveled to the outer reaches of civilization (Nebraska) in the quest of a Bambi Burger.  (Hope he brings us back some sausage!)  In the meantime let me bring you up to date on our November tournament.

At the club meeting, the first presided over by our new Grand FooBob Jeff Weaver; I was paired with “The” Bob Jones.  Bob and I had fished together once before and I was looking forward to fishing with him again.  Now Bob has a bad reputation of being the cause of major trouble for his partners.  It’s not that Bob causes problems; it’s just that he’s always present when trouble happens.  With this in mind, I started getting my boat ready a full day early just to be sure that everything was in good working order, and that I headed off any potential problems.  Meeting Bob at Food World, we hit the interstate in route to Live Oak Landing on the Tensaw River.  Now the club is a frequent visitor to the Tensaw, but this was our first visit to Live Oak landing since June 2002.  The Landing has been closed for the last ten years and just recently reopened for general public use.  The return to Live Oak was somewhat sentimental for me, as it was twenty years ago this month that I fished my guest tournament with Buddy Paul out of Live Oak.    Buddy has since left us, but the memories of that first tournament have stayed with me all these years.

On the way to the river Bob and I talked about where we wanted to start.  Bob had it on good authority that the best fishing was to be found down south in Conway.  Traditionally, this time of year finds the fish chasing shrimp in the grass so I agreed with him.  Arriving at the landing we found patchy fog that was fairly thick in spots, so I recommended that we start in Red Creek and then work our way south as the fog burned off.  Bob agreed so at blast off we headed to Red Creek.  I was hoping that I hadn’t made a mistake when almost immediately we both hooked up.  Bob on a spinner bait and me on a worm.  Both fish were small but at least we knew that there were active fish in the area.  Bob quickly hooked up with another small fish and I started working our way to a deep hole that many of us fish.  On the way I picked up my first keeper, and Bob also put his first keeper in the boat.  As the fog burned off we continued to catch fish, and as the sun came out I was amazed at how clear the water was.  It was almost like fishing Lake Martin or Lay Lake.  With the sun out and the fog gone, we pack up and headed south.  Arriving at the entrance to Conway, we found the river muddy and the water so low that we couldn’t safely get in the creek so we headed to another spot, but the water was running so fast that we couldn’t effectively fish it.  Since we were all ready down south, we decided to stick our heads in McVey and try our luck there.  The water was muddy and low so after a half hour or so we decided to pack up again and head back north.  Going back in Red Creek we started to pick up fish again.  Most of the fish were small but we both managed to put four keepers in the boat.  At three o’clock, Bob wanted to try a couple of creek mouths close to the landing in hopes of picking up our fifth fish.  At about three thirty, I did finish my limit but unfortunately Bob wasn’t able to finish his.

Prior to weigh-in, as we bumped our smaller fish, Bob discovered that one of his fish had shorten up to less than 12 inch, therefore, he was only able to bring three fish to the scales.  After the weighing was done, it was found that Bill Myrick had taken first place with 5 fish at 6.49 lbs.; and his partner, Mack Cramer, was second with 5 fish for 6.32 lbs.  Jeff Weaver found five fish at 6.12 lbs. which was good enough for third, and Jere Jaillite was fourth with the smallest limit of the day that weighted in at 5.80 lbs.  Lunker for the tournament went to Buddy Yates with a 2.97 lb. beauty.  Bob’s three fish were good enough for him to finish in fifth place.  Next month we head to Escambia River.  Just remember that our meeting will be on the second Wednesday of the month and we fish the following Saturday.  Until then everyone keep your lines tight and your hooks sharp.
