TOURNAMENT REPORT

Apalachicola River October 19 & 20, 2013
Pine Log Road

The Apalachicola River delta was the site for our October tournament and annual Fish-off.  We had a front moving in from the west that brought heavy rains on Saturday but did not last too long.  For the most part the water was stained in the main river and some creeks were clear and some others were stained.  Water temps were in the mid to upper 70’s.  Sunday we had cloudy skies and cool temps but it was very pleasant.

I drew out behind Dave Bock.  We decided on a plan, and on tournament day we headed out to a bank he likes in Wimico.  We found many fish there but they were all small.  The only baits we could get to work for us were an assortment of dark plastics. We fished hard all day there and by the end of the day I had 4 small keepers and he had 2 small keepers.

At the scales there were several guys with limits.  It seemed if you found keepers then both guys in the boat caught a limit of keepers.  Even though many fish were weighed in the fish were all small. Mack Cramer did have a 3.36 lb lunker for big fish. He also had the lunker the 2nd day @ 1.42 lbs. I have listed the order of the 10 places for this tournament below as this fish-off did pay out 10 places.

Day 1 results

1st- Mack Cramer 5 @8.92 lbs

2nd Jim Bailey Sr 5 @ 6.51 lbs

3rd Dave Dyess 5 @ 6.36 lbs

4th Buddy Yates 5 @6.32 lbs

5th Roger Helm 5 @ 6.25 lbs

6th Jeremy Burkhart   5@ 6.03 lbs

7th Jeff Weaver  5 @ 5.77 lbs

8th Ron Bridges 4 @ 5.09 lbs

9th Bob Jones 5 @ 4.88 lbs

10th John Buck 4 @ 4.79 lbs

Really this was very small “pickins” for this site and only small fish were found.  But the stage was set for a tight race in day 2.

Saturday night the club provided the meal, our annual “president’s dinner” and we had steaks and baked potatoes, and salad.  I think everyone had a great time and really enjoyed the food.  We were also treated to a special dessert from Jeff’s better half, Brenda.  She made a big pan of banana pudding and also some great brownies.  A really special thank you goes out for her and also lots of pats on the back because she does put up with Jeff.  Also thank you to Dave Bock, Dave Dyess and Jere Jaillite for their efforts to acquire the food and bringing the   grill and other needs we use in the cook outs.  To all those who helped in clean up and special thank you also.  This kind of outing with these social times really makes our club special and so much enjoyable.

Day 2 of the tournament arrived with cooler temps and light winds from the north. We had an outgoing tide running hard.  Dave and I decided to go for broke and try to find bigger fish because we did not think the small bite would hold up. We were wrong.  Even the biggest fish brought to the scales on Sunday weighed only 1.42 lbs.  We fished downstream areas and we caught even smaller fish than in the day before. I think we each probably caught 10-15 fish but we had only 1 keeper between the two of us. Those guys who stayed with the small bites they had on Saturday had that bite repeat on Sunday.

Day 2 FINAL RESULTS (included totals from day 1)

1st Mack Cramer 10 fish @ 14.07 lbs

2nd Jeff Weaver 10 fish @ 11.84 lbs

Congratulations to the winners!

This was also our final tournament for 2013 and the final standings did change a bit for the Top six fishermen.  Congratulations to all.

1st place Club Champion for 2013—Jere Jaillite

2nd place Jeff Weaver

3rd place Mack Cramer

4th place Lee Brannon

5th place John Buck

6th place Brian McCarthy

Congratulations to the “top Six” and Jere had such a lead in the standings that all he had to do was show up and he would win.  That is a feat in itself to garner that big of a lead during the year.  Great job Jere.

While I am spreading “kudos” I need to mention that once again our e-board did a great job with the club this past year. If you did not submit your tournament suggestions to them please get in contact with one of the new e-board members and let them know your suggestions.  Don Jahnke will be the only member not returning to the e-board. Don served as our tournament director for the past 2 years. Thank you Don for your efforts and time with all the tournaments.  The 2014 e-board will be President -Jeff Weaver.  Secretary- Dave Bock.  Treasurer- Buddy Yates.  Tournament director- Mack Cramer. Asst tournament director- Carlito Sylvania.  One more “thank you“ is in order also and that is for ALL of the members who  helped make this such a great bass club. One person does not make a club or even a few. It takes all the members working together to make it run smoothly and be enjoyable. Let’s keep the good times going again in the coming year.

November will start our new tournament season.  The tournament will be held on the Tensaw River so make your plans to attend.  I will not be here in Nov as I will be hunting bambi in Nebraska that time but I will see you again in December.  Until next month…Keep your hooks sharp!
