TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Jordan
April 26 & 27, 2014
Bonner's Landing

Okay fishing fans, you have once again ended up with the “B” team as our illustrious writer, Scribe John, took it upon himself to leave town the day after the Lake Jordan tournament.  Personally, I didn’t think his fourth place finish was so bad that he had to get out of town, but then again, I finished behind him so fourth looked pretty good to me.  At least he will get an envelope with his name on it at the next club meeting.
As stated above, the Hawg Hunters returned to Lake Jordan, Alabama, for our April tournament.  This was the second year in a row that we went to Jordan for our April outing, but unlike last year, we moved our schedule around due to Easter, and was able to avoid much of the chaos that we encountered last year.  In fact the ramp at Bonners Landing was virtually empty each morning when we arrived to launch our boats.  It was a far cry from the hundred or so boats that greeted us on Saturday morning last year, but if I had any illusions that we were going to enjoy a peaceful day on Lake Jordan that idea was quickly dashed.
At blast off on Saturday morning my partner, Dan Nash, and I headed to our number one hole which was a small cove north of the boat ramp.  The fish were there and quite active which allowed me to quickly put a fair limit of fish in the live well.  As the fifth fish was being introduced to its new temporary home, two Yahoos’ in a tin boat came in on top of us and started fish the bank in front of us.  One of these clowns even had the nerve to ask what we were using. Think I made them mad when I replied “a pink Ding-a-ling” because they soon left but not before jumping up on plane in the confines of this small cove, and giving us a pretty good bouncing.  While this was the worse interaction of the week-end it was certainly not the only run in with other fisherman, jet skis, and party barges.  Guess they don’t teach the word “courtesy” in the Alabama / Montgomery school system.
Yes, Saturday was memorable day on the lake for several other reasons also.  After surviving a boat collision (no damage, no injury) and a dead starting battery an hour before weigh in we finally arrived at the landing thanks to the help of Lee Brannon and his partner Dave Dyess along with equally appreciated help from Mack Cramer and his partner Bob Jones.  It may seem like small potatoes to take time out of a tournament day to help a fellow club member, but remember, that’s time that the helper and his partner could be filling out a limit of fish or up-grading their limit.  It is no small thing and “Thank You” seems somewhat inadequate but “Thank You” guy’s we really appreciated your help.
At weigh-in, thirteen limits were brought to the scales with mine being one of them.  My limit was good for no better than eighth place after day one.  Jeremy Burkart, Kevin Simmons, Bill Myrick, and Jeff Weaver set the first day standard while Marion Johnson once again (two tournament days in a row) brought in the lunker for the day.  His 4.36 beauty also proved to be the lunker of the tournament.
As with all of our two day tournaments, Saturday night was high-lighted by one of our traditional “chat and chew” events.  Fried Chicken, potato salad, and baked bean really hit the spot.  Seems like there were some awful good brownies on the table also thanks to Brenda Weaver.  After a quick clean-up it got real quiet down at our end of the motel as everyone headed to the showers and bed.
Sunday was almost a repeat of Saturday, but the weather wasn’t quite as hot and the fish weren’t quite as active.  At one o’clock seventeen tired fisherman happily arrived at the final weigh-in. Seven limits were brought to the scales along with Dave Dyess’ 3.51 pound lunker for the day.  When all was weighed, recorded, and figured; Kevin Simmons took the win, followed closely by Bill Myrick in second, Jeff Weaver in third, and John Buck in forth. Next month we head to one of my favorite bodies of water; Millers Ferry.  Until then everyone keep your hooks sharp and your lines tight.
To end on a happy note:  On Friday one of our fisherman, Frank Kelly, received a call that his daughter had been admitted to the hospital in Pensacola where she was visiting from Little Rock, Arkansas.  I’m happy to report that she was discharged from the hospital on Sunday and returned home to Arkansas on Monday.  It appears that she is just fine and our prayers go with her for a quick and complete recovery.
