TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
August 23, 2014
Hubbard's Landing

As we approached the tournament day, the forecast was for the hottest days of the year with heat indices around 110.  We were fishing out of Hubbard’s Landing on the Tensaw River system.   The waters levels were really good and we had an incoming tide for the day.  The water color was stained but not bad.  The water surface temps were mostly in the mid 80’s.  We had 17 brave souls trying to find the little green fish.

My partner for the tournament was Tom Labelle.  We had never fished together, and I was looking forward to fishing with him.  While the fishing was slow, I thoroughly had a great time. Tom was a great partner.  We caught a lot of short fish and even a few warmouths as they were hitting lots because there was a huge willow fly hatch all over the upper parts of the system.  We fished several spots from Douglas Lake down to the fingers below Upper Bryant’s.  Everywhere we went we found the mayflies.  We fished crankbaits and spinners for a little time but never got any hits.  All of our bites came on plastic worms.  Dark colors worked best (black, junebug, black grape, etc).  Tom managed to pick up a couple of keepers in the day, but I only managed a single small keeper.  We just never got in the right place at the right time to get the bite.  Even with the terrible heat and the few bites, I really enjoyed the day.  Tom is really a good fishing partner, and I look forward to fishing with him again.

As usual a few guys find some fish, and for our group it is usually the same 2-3 guys hehe.  Jeff Weaver showed up with a nice bag of 5 fish @7.45 lbs to take the win.  Wow… Jeff is making the run for the championship really tight.  Congratulations Jeff on your win…AGAIN!!!  Kevin Simmons (Jeff’s partner) took 2nd place with 4 fish @ 6.47 lbs and he also had the lunker @ 2.48 lbs.  Way to go Kevin!  Not to be denied   a spot in the top 3 was Jere Jailitte who had 5 fish @ 5.49 lbs to grab the 3rd spot.  Jere is staying on top like in past years because he is so consistent every month, but like I said the race to the top is getting tighter. Taking 4th place was Don Jahnke with 4 fish @ 4.42 lbs.  Congratulations to the top 4 finishers for their efforts in the extreme conditions.

As usual in the Tensaw system, most fish were caught on dark worms. Most were caught around the bases of cypress trees on shady banks..(no secrets there!).  Also of importance is that most fish were caught above Hubbard’s and not below.  Best times for bites seemed to be early at dawn and then again around noon until about 1:30 PM.

After the weigh-in we were treated to a nice lunch of hot dogs with all the trimmings.   A special thanks goes to Don Jahnke and his sweet bride Edna, and also to Mack Cramer for their work in putting this together.  It was a nice change of pace for us to sit under the trees and relax and tell jokes and  eat a bite before heading on the road home.

Next month our tournament is a 2 day tournament at Lake Mitchell and it should be a great outing.  Lake Mitchell usually produces some great bags of fish and it is always fun to catch the Coosa Spots.  Be sure to make your plans to attend the meeting and the tournament.  Also the club will furnish the meal for Saturday night and that is always lots of fun.  Prepare carefully if you are fishing in the extreme heat and be safe always.

..Until next time.....Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
