TOURNAMENT REPORT

Escambia River
December 14, 2013
Swamphouse Landing

The tournament this month was on the Escambia River.  We had 9 boats fishing.  Like so many of our tournaments this year, rain was in the forecast.  It was good to be back this month after missing last time to look for a deer hunting trip.  My partner was Carlito Sylvania.  Carlito and I fished the Perdido River tournament this summer together and endured a monsoon and we were prepared for the same this month.  We decided to fish in the grass because we knew there were lots of fish in the grass this time of year but also they are generally smaller fish.  We thought maybe we could “wade” our way through a bunch of small fish and find 5 small keepers each.  We were wrong.  I caught 25 bass but only managed 3 keepers and Carlito caught 15 and had 1 keeper.   For what it is worth, we caught all of our fish on green pumpkin plastics.   We fished shakey head worms and speed craws and had equal success on each.  We did try other colors but not any luck.  We started out throwing buzz baits and spinner baits for the first hour or so and we did not get even the first bite.  When we switched to plastics we got bites immediately. Because we did get so many bites we did not get bored with the day but it is frustrating with all the small fish.

At the scales most guys had some fish and they caught lots of small fish both up river and down.  However, as usual, the bigger fish came from upriver places.  Jeff Weaver brought in 3 nice fish from upriver to win with total weight of 6.26 lbs and also the lunker @ 3.71 lbs.  Great job Jeff!  Mack Cramer had the only limit and took 2nd place with 5 fish @ 6.16 lbs.  He also fished upriver.  Jere Jaillite took 3rd place with 3 fish @ 3.31 lbs and he fished in the grass.  John Buck took 4th place with 3 fish @ 3.18 lbs. also from the grass.  From the talk at the scales most fish came on worms and spinner baits.

From the looks of this tournament and last month also, we really need to get a check on Jeff, Mack, and Jere before they get too far ahead of the rest of the field.  They may all be making an early run for the FOY honors.  It looks like the club is off to a good start for the coming year and the new e-board is doing a good job in leading.

If you missed the Awards Banquet, you missed a really good time.  We had a great evening with about 35 + people attending. Congratulations to all who received awards and special thanks to all who worked to make this activity such a nice evening.

Nest month the tournament will be out of Cliff’s landing on the Tensaw River.  It will be Jan 18, so mark your calendar and make your plans.  That is a great time to fish the lower Tensaw delta.  Hope to see you at the meeting

Keep You Hooks Sharp!
