TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
January 18, 2014
Cliff's Landing

The

The Tensaw River on the Mobile Delta was the site for the tournament.  We fished out of Cliff’s Landing.  We had 19 fishermen trying to brave the cold temps of this frosty January morning.  At the blast off the temperature was 26 k and cold.  Main river temps held steady all day at 44, but warmer water could be found in the creeks.  The river had a heavy stain but it was clearer in some creeks.  Skies were clear and the morning sun brought us a welcome warming.  We had a falling tide in the morning and incoming in the afternoon.  The winds were light until about 1 pm then a south wind blew maybe 15-20 from this time until weigh in at 4 PM.  This made for extremely rough ground swells and waves in the main river.

Cliff Armstrong and I fished together and we decided to try 1 mile and 3 mile creeks hoping to find warmer water and we did find 50 degree water there and plenty of bites.  We caught 40 fish between the two of us.  Cliff never had a keeper and I had only 3 small keepers.  We caught almost everything on black and blue plastics fished slowly.  We tried spinner baits some but never got a bite.  We met Ron Bridges and his partner Bob Jones as we were fishing our way out of 3 mile and they did find some keepers   in the areas we had just left.    I guess Cliff and I just did not have the right touch, or maybe we were leaving when a few keepers started to bite.

At the scales Jeff Weaver continued his run for the last 3 years of consistently finding and catching a nice bag of fish, and he took the win with 4 fish @ 7.05 lbs.   Not to be forgotten, Jere Jaillite continued his dominance in the standings also with a nice bag of 5 fish @6.37 lbs.   Ron Bridges found a nice bag of fish to grab 3rd place with a limit @ 5.83lbs.   Lee Brannon, (now known as “Skeeter Man” until he finds a sandbar again) brought 4 keepers to the scales to take 4th place with 4.95 lbs.   Big fish went to Mack Cramer @2.33 lbs.

Most of the guys said that they caught their fish in creeks and lakes off the main river and almost all caught them on soft plastics in dark colors.  Junebug was the primary color and black was a close second for favorites.  Even with the very cold temps and ice freezing up the rod eyes  still the delta fish were biting but  just so many small fish there now.

Nobody has stepped up and truly tried to earn a nomination for the slammer so far this year but Jere did have a few problems launching his boat …….  Of course Billy has been fishing as a non-boater so that helps him not get a nomination.  Lee just got a new boat so he is being extra careful.  However I know there are others out there who are really anxious to get a nomination so don’t worry guys..NSA has told me that they will be watching.

The e-board is doing a great job in running the meetings, and things are going really good in the club.  Mack as expected, is doing a great job as Tournament Director and the tournaments are running smoothly and the weigh-ins are good.    We have enjoyed a really good tournament seasons for over 10 consecutive years now without any major issues thanks to committed leaders in the e-board and a general membership that employs a very cooperative attitude.  Thanks to all of you guys for making this a great group to be a part of and to fish with.  Also if you do not check the website, you are missing a very enjoyable site to visit.  Great job Dave!

Our next meeting will be February 19 at 7PM.  The tournament is at Fish River on Saturday, February 22.  Make your plans to attend the meeting and to fish.  This is a great time for fishing the delta rivers and for catching numbers of fish.  Even if they are usually small, still it is fun to catch lots of them and sometimes you get lucky and find some good ones also.  Be safe in the cold weather and protect yourself from the elements and dangers of hypothermia.  Hope to see you all at the meeting.  Until next time,
Keep Your Hooks sharp!
