TOURNAMENT REPORT
Perdido River |
July 19, 2014 |
Seminole Landing |
So The Perdido River was the site for our July tournament. We launched from the public ramp at Seminole, Alabama. We had much rain lately and the River was rising with a good stain. The Styx River was dirty and high. Good water could still be found in the lower bays and creeks near the mouth of the Perdido. The temps were comfortable, in the 80’s. We had heavy rains and thunderstorms in the early morning, and by mid-morning it began to break and was a very pleasant. We had members 18 fishing and 1 guest. I drew out behind Dave Bock for this month. Dave had a backwater area he wanted to fish near the mouth of the Perdido and we headed there first thing. I started throwing a topwater and Dave started with a white spinner bait. I soon lost confidence in the top water as Dave landed a nice bass on a small point with an isolated log on it. I switched to a dark worm to try to follow up behind him in case there was ever another fish and I did get bites and caught only small fish. We worked about 10 minutes down the bank and came to another isolated log and Dave got another nice fish about 2.5 lbs on the spinner bait. I switched to a spinner bait but never got the first bite but I did throw it a lot. Fifteen minutes later Dave hooked up with a solid 3 pound bass again on spinner bait and again on an isolates log. It was raining so very hard and the fish were eating that spinner bait strong. We continued to work the banks but never got another good bite but we did catch several small fish. We moved out of the backwater area to fish around some islands in the main river and Dave caught a big sail fin catfish on a crankbait… and the fish really slimed his line. With all the rain Dave had a bit of trolling motor problems - blew a 50 amp fuse - and we had to return to the landing to get tools needed to make the repair but Dave managed to fix it in short order. We returned to fish but our bite had quit and we spent a lot of time just hunting fish without any bites. About 1 pm we went to the mouth of Blackwater Creek and Dave caught his 4th keeper on a worm. For me the day was about as much fun and trying to give a cat a bath in a sink. For me it was small fish only and not a single keeper to bring to the scales. Dave really kicked my butt on this trip. At the weigh in we found that a few others found a few fish also. Michael Johnson, who was fishing his guest tournament brought in 4 nice bass weighing over 7 lbs but because it was his guest tournament they did not count in the tournament. Taking the 4th slot was Mack Cramer with 3 monsters weighing 3.43 lbs. Congratulations Mack … at least you had some keepers. Third place went to Buddy Yates with 2 fish @ 4.89 lbs and big fish @ 3.63 lbs. Great job Buddy!! Tony Boyette took 2nd place with 3 fish @ 5.29 lbs. Those were 3 nice fish Tony. Taking first place was Dave Bock with 4 fish @ 8.07 lbs. Good job Dave . You put together a good pattern early and stuck with it. Most of the guys said that they caught their fish mostly on dark worms and soft plastics. However Dave did put it together with a white spinner bait on wood. I think that almost everyone did get a few bites even if some of us never found a keeper. The weigh in went smoothly and Mack, as usual, did a great job getting the fish weighed in. Next month we will fish out of Hubbard’s Landing on the upper Tensaw River. It will most likely be very hot so make sure you have your live wells running good and take care of the fish. August can be like an oven so be sure to drink plenty of liquids starting a few days prior to the tournament. The August tournament will be our last short day tournament for the year. We will have a 2 pm weigh in. Also, next month is the deadline for submitting any rule changes/constitutional changes you may have in mind. If you have any proposals make sure you bring them to the meeting and have them in writing. You need to have it at the meeting! It is a big help for the secretary if you will email him your proposals so he can “cut and paste” them and post it on the web page for the members to review. Until next time…Keep your hooks sharp!
