TOURNAMENT REPORT

Lake Seminole
March 22 & 23, 2014
Land's End Landing

Lake Seminole was the site for our March tournament.  We fished out of Trails End Marina.  We also stayed in the cabins there.  It was a new location for us and personally I really enjoyed it.  It was nice to be away from the crowds like in a motel.  We had great access to the ramp and the grounds and cabins were clean and set up well.  The only bad thing was the beds need to be replaced with better mattresses.  The management and staff worked hard to accommodate us and were outgoing and friendly.  I vote to go there again if they fix the beds.

The weather was pleasant for us with partly cloudy skies and light winds for the most part.  We had a small rain shower on Sunday.  The water temps ranged from about 58 – 68 depending on where you were.  Clarity was slight stain to very clear depending where you fished.  The water level was a bit high but not bad from recent rains.

Ron Bridges and I drew out as partners with me fishing behind him as a non-boater.  We went up a day early and fished hard in the lower areas of the Hooch but we never found any good concentrations of fish.  Saturday of the tournament we made some bad choices and only caught 3 keepers between the two of us.  We only found fish on soft plastics and when we did throw a spinner bait we just caught jack fish.

At the Saturday weigh-in Ron and I learned that while we had a terrible day, almost everyone else had a very good day. Don Jahnke led the pack with a beautiful limit @ 15.29 lbs. He also had a “boo-ray” fish for the lunker @ 5.91 lbs.  If I am not mistaken guys, this is the second time in 2 years that he has done this at Seminole.  Maybe we should not let him fish Seminole again or at least find a way to slow him down a bit.  No matter what, Don, “you done good!”  Congratulations.  Coming in 2nd place was Dave Bock with 5 pretty fish @ 14.44 lbs.  That was a great bag of fish Dave.  Taking the 3rd slot on Saturday was Billy Myrick with a limit @ 13.39 lbs.   Good job Billy!  I think Billy, Dave, and Don were all fishing in the lower lake area near the junction of the Flint and Hooch.  4th place for day one was Marion Johnson with 5 fish @ 11.99 lbs.  Hey Marion wow you did great. Keep up the good fishing.  Oh yeah Don and Marion were partners in the tournament.  That boat was really in some good fish.

As for the rest of the group we had a lot of fish and everyone did catch a fish on Saturday.  We had a total weight Saturday of 125.35 lbs.  For a club total weight that was good.  Most of the fish were caught on trick worms in dark colors fishing deep grass.  A few said they caught bass on spinner baits and few were caught on crank baits.

We had a great place for our cookout with a beautiful large deck on the lakeshore and we all enjoyed ourselves eating hamburgers and bratwurst.  Thank you for all who helped in this effort.  Too many to mention here cause I will forget someone but “Thank you” for all who did the work and helped.

We started day 2 with cloudy skies and light breezes and a bit of fog.  We did not have any mishaps and that was a good thing.  Ron and I decided to head up river to something different from what we had tried Saturday.  We went up to the cut through that leads to Paramores from the lower end and started fishing backwater coves.  We both caught a few short fish and we both got broke off a couple of times but at least we got some bites.  As we started to fish our way back to the weigh in Ron spotted and small cut and suggested we try it.  It was a great call!  In about 100 yards we caught 5 keepers.  We fished the place 2 more times without any more bites then it was time to head to the scales.

Day 2 was typical for many tournaments for us because many who caught fish on Saturday did not do as well Sunday.  The places did change a bit for the final weigh in but, Don Jahnke did NOT lose his place.  Don won the tournament with a total weight of 23.21 lbs.  Great win Don!  Marion Johnson moved up to take 2nd place with a total of 18.7 lbs.  Wow Marion you really had some nice fish.  Do not show Don any more of your fishing spots.  Taking the 3rd slot was Dave Bock.  Dave you hung in there and kept “chunking”.  Nice total weight @ 17.67 lbs.  Jere Jaillite did not stay quiet for the second day and he rebounded with a nice bag of fish and took 4th place with a total weight of 17.56 lbs.  Jere, I must admit you have been so consistent each month now for the past 2 years.  The 2nd day lunker went to John Buck with a nice fish @ 4.22 lbs.

Overall we weighed in a total of 96 fish for a total weight of 212.01 lbs.  Most fish once again were caught on dark worm and soft plastics.  For the club it was a really good tournament and it was fun like always to visit and socialize with everyone at the cookout.   Next month we travel to Wetumpka, Alabama to fish Lake Jordan.  This is one of my favorite lakes even though sometimes I do not do so well but I do love to catch the big spotted bass.  We will have another cookout   on Saturday, and if you have not fished a 2 day tournament in a while this should be on your list to fish.  Remember the meeting next month is April 15 but because of Easter Sunday the tournament will not be until April 26 & 27.

Until next time ..Keep your hooks sharp!
