TOURNAMENT REPORT

Miller's Ferry
May 21, 2014
Ellis Landing

Miller’s Ferry was the site for our May tournament.  We launched out of Ellis Landing.  We had 15 members and 1 guest (Matt Brown) participating.  The weather was mostly cloudy in the morning and partly cloudy in the afternoon.  Air temps were pleasant in the morning but got hot by mid-day.  The water was lightly stained to muddy depending on where one fished.  The main river started clearing as the day passed.

I drew out with Lee Brannon for the day and I enjoyed fishing in his new boat.  We started out in the back of creeks below the landing and I immediately picked up 2 nice keepers   on a worm along the grass edges.  We fished  for a couple of hours after that  and  had nothing but a few small  dinks so we decided to move up river to another spot.  Lee got a keeper and I got more short fish.  Then we went to a spot I like on the main river and I picked up a small keeper.  After that we headed upstream to another creek (Ladell Slough) and we found lots of fish on the grass edges.  It was here that Lee gave me a lesson on how to catch fish.   He caught five to my every one.  We had to wade through some small fish but there were some good fish mixed in.  We both broke off a couple of 3 pounders when they got us over logs but at least we did get to see them before they made their exits.  Lee was able to cull about 3 but I never got my 5th keeper.  We had a great time fishing together and the day passed quickly.  We caught our fish mostly on worms but we did have a few good blow-ups on frogs.  Dark colors (junebug,  blackgrape) were our  main baits.

At the scales Jeff Weaver showed everyone how to put a great bag of fish in the boat and he took 1st place with 5 fish @13.91 lbs. He also had the lunker @5.12 lbs and took the booray prize also.  I think that is the 3rd time this year we have caught the booray fish.  Sometimes it seems that it takes a year for someone to catch a booray.  Great job Jeff…  Taking 2nd place was Lee Brannon with a nice limit @9.41 lbs.  Better watch out for him guys… He may be in for a good summer season.  3rd place went to Mack Cramer.  He had a limit @ 8.62 lbs.  Mr. Buzzbait said he lost a giant early but ..that is fishing.. Jere Jailite took 4th place with a limit @ 8.46 lbs.  Some guys just always seem to be in the hunt.  Jere has been in the top 4 in almost every tournament for the past 2-3 years.

Overall I think we had a good day and there were lots of fish caught but most were small.  Soon I fear that the dreaded dog days will arrive and the bass will be in full summer mode and hard to find after sunrise.  Most of the guys said they   found a few fish on cranks baits or spinners or top water baits, but the majority of the fish were caught on dark worms in grassy areas.

Nest month we will have our first “short day” tournament.  We’re fishing Tensaw River out of Cliff’s Landing.  Good luck to all. Plan to be at the meeting and fish.  It will be short day and the weigh-in will be at 2 PM.  I will ask Jere if he can cover for me next month because I will be on a fishing trip in Canada that time.  Good luck guys and catch a bunch.
Until next time…Keep Your Hooks sharp!
