November
means different things to different
people. To many it
means Thanksgiving
and the start of Christmas shopping, but to the Pensacola Hawg Hunter’s
it
means the end of the hurricane season and the beginning of a new
fishing
year. Our
illustrious “master of the
word” John (the wordster) Buck has once again chosen this time to
forsaken us
and travel to the great void of Nebraska is search of white-tail. White-tail Deer that is. I don’t think his quest for
a Bambi burger was
as successful as John would have liked last year, so we can only hope
that it
is more to his liking this year. At
the November meeting I was paired with Carlito
Silvania. I was
really looking forward
to this pairing because not only is Carlito a fun partner, he lives
right around
the corner from me. Although
we had
fished together before, this would be our first time to partner in a
club
tournament. While
discussing where we
wanted to fish, Carlito stated that since he was relatively new to the
Tensaw
River system he was willing to allow me to select the spots where we
went. The fact that
I had some success in picking
spots last year might have had something to do with his decision also. At
blast-off we quickly headed to my #1 “secret”
hole. This hole is
so secret that only
our “Grand FooBob” Jeff Weaver and I know of it.
Well only Jeff and I and about two thousand
other fishermen. Arriving
at secret hole
#1, we were greeted by a sight that I had never seen before. The creek was covered bank
to bank with
floating Duck Weed, and had only a rare open spot to fish. Jeff soon arrived and we
both came to the
same conclusion. These
waters were
unfishable. Jeff
quickly left and headed
for spots unknown and I followed shortly behind him.
While
trying to come up with a plan B, and not
disappoint Carlito, we passed a spot that our much missed member, Wally
Cassiano, use to fish. I
hadn’t fished
this spot, nor seen anybody else, fish it since Wally’s passing ten
years
ago. We decided to
give it a try and
immediately started to put fish in the boat.
Most were small, but at least we were getting our
string pulled. Carlito
put the first keeper in the boat and
I followed shortly thereafter with a couple of my own.
After exhausting “Wally’s” hole we made a
short run to a creek that Jim Sr. and I like.
With the tide running out, the fish were biting and
I quickly finished
my limit. Carlito
matched me fish for
fish, but unfortunately his were all short.
Also, unfortunately the tide stopped running and the
fish stopped
biting. We tried
several other spots but
were only able to produce short fish for the rest of the day. At
weigh-in it became apparent that while most
people found fish, most people struggled to get past the one or two
keeper
fish. When all was
said and done only three
limits were brought to the scales. Mack
Crammer started the new year the same way he ended the old year. Mack’s five fish limit
which weighed 9.48lbs
was good for first place and his big fish of 2.79lbs was the tournament
lunker. That’s two
months in a row for
Mack. My five fish
limit of 5.70lbs was
good enough to beat Kevin Simmons’ limit of 5.65lbs for second, while
Kevin
finished in third. Frank
Kelly began the
new year with a strong showing of 4 fish for 4.76lbs and fourth place.
Congratulations
to the top four. Next
month we journey to the mighty Escambia River
for our December tournament. Remember
that our meeting will be held early (December 11th)
and the
tournament is on December 14th.
Last year the Escambia tournament produced two fish
over five pounds and
one of those was a six pound beauty.
Everyone
make plans now for fishing this tournament. DON’T
FORGET:
December 6th is the
club’s award banquet. Here’s hoping to see everyone and their
sweethearts at 6:00 p.m. on that Friday night at the Cock of the Walk.
Until
then be safe. Jere |
