TOURNAMENT REPORT
Lay Lake |
October 18/19, 2014 |
Lower Dam Landing |
The October tournament/Fish-off was held at Lay Lake, near Clanton, Alabama. We had 18 members fishing. The weather was cool with lows in the upper 40’s and highs about 75. The water in the main lake was clear but in the back parts of some creeks it was very muddy due to rain earlier in the week. My partner for the tournament was Billy Myrick. We went up a couple of days early to try to locate some fish. We found fish on both days. We did not find any big concentrations but we did find good quality fish scattered in many places. Our confidence was high until mid-day Friday when the power pack on my motor quit. We were dead in the water. Mack Cramer and Dave Dyess came to our rescue and towed us in to the landing. Mack did some on site trouble shooting and we thought it was probably a coil or stator. He graciously offered to allow us to use his other boat which was in Pensacola. So, Mack and I hurriedly packed up and headed back to Pensacola and got his other boat. We finally arrived back in Clanton about 9:30 PM on Friday night. I cannot say “thank you” enough for his efforts and kindness for allowing us to use his boat. We launched on Saturday with renewed hopes of finding our fish. When we arrived at our first stop we found that the trolling motor cable had come off the pulleys in the foot control and also in the trolling motor head. We headed back to the landing and thank goodness I had removed my tool box from my boat before and so we had tools to repair the problem. We got it fixed and returned to start our fishing about 8:30 am on Saturday. Our fish were not there! We basically struggled to get bites all day. By the end of the day Billy had one keeper and I had only 2 small keepers. At the scales for the Saturday weigh-in, there were many mixed stories and lies of catches and losses. However, as in the past 2 years the same guys found the fish and caught them. I think we all need just to follow Jere or Jeff and just watch them for a while to learn their secrets. The Saturday results are listed below. 1st Jere Jailite..5 fish @ 11.93 2nd Jeff Weaver 5 fish @ 9.73 3rd Lee Brannon 4 fish @ 9.71, Lee also had lunker @ 4.55 4th Tony Boyette 5 fish @ 9.03 5th Kevin Simmons 5 fish @ 8.58 6th Mack Cramere 5 fish @ 6.11 7th Ron Bridges 4 fish @ 5.94 8th Don Jahnke 3 fish @ 5.74 9th Michael Johnson (not in fish-off) 3 fish @5.36 10th Dave Bock 3 fish @ 4.29 11th Cliff Armstrong 2 fish @ 4.04 Saturday night we had our steak cook-out with tossed salad and baked potatoes all furnished by the club. It was a great time and I think everyone enjoyed the social together. A special thank you goes to Brenda Weaver for providing delicious banana pudding and brownies for our dessert. Also I need to say thank you to Dave Dyess for getting the supplies for the dinner and for the others , Jeff Weaver, Dave Bock, and Jere Jailitte, and also for all the others who helped in the effort cooking and cleaning to make this a really fun event. The team work and participation in these outings really make this a fun club to be involved with. Day 2 arrived with almost the same conditions as Saturday. We started at safe day light and headed for our search again in hopes of finding a better bite than the day before. Billy and I did not find things much better. We did find shad in the grass very thick but not many fish trying to get to them. Billy picked up a fish early on a fluke and then we did not get another fish for several hours. I managed a couple of small fish on a worm. About noon I managed to get 2 more small fish on a worm but it was “too little too late”. At least we did get “golf ball” fish! The final tournament results are: 1st Jere Jailite 10 fish @ 22.79 2nd Jeff Weaver 10 fish @ 19.37 3rd Kevin Simmons 10 fish @ 16.24 4th Michael Johnson (not in fish-off) 8 fish @ 15.92 5th Mack Cramer 10 fish @ 13.52 6th Tony Boyette 8 fish @ 13.28 7th Lee Brannon 7 fish @ 13.01 8th Cliff Armstrong 7 fish @ 12.05 9th Dave Bock 5 fish @ 11.45 10th Dave Dyess 5 fish @ 9.31 11th Don Jahnke 4 fish @ 8.22 The places 5th – 11th move up one spot for the fish-off payouts. Michael Johnson was not fishing the fish-off but he was fishing in the “monthly tournament”. The lunker on Sunday went to Marion Johnson @ 4.23 lbs. Most fish were caught on worms in junebug or green pumpkin colors. A few fish were caught on chartreuse /black crank baits. Overall this was a really good weekend for us. Even though the total numbers and weights were not as good as some of our other fish-offs, still I think everyone enjoyed the weekend. We had great weather and everyone caught at least a few fish. Again I want to say a special personal thank you to Mack Cramer for his help “above and beyond” in his help for me and my partner when I had motor problems. This type of attitude and sportsmanship is one of the things that has made the Hawg Hunters one of the best local fishing clubs for the past 34 consecutive years. The TOP SIX FISHERMEN FOR THE YEAR ARE: 1st Place Club CHAMPION..JERE JAILITE 2nd Place..Jeff Weaver 3rd Place ..Mack Cramer 4th Place..Kevin Simmons 5th Place.. Billy Myrick 6th Place Dave Dyess CONGRATULATIONS TO THIS ELITE GROUP OF MEMBERS. THEY HAVE WORKED ALL YEAR TO GET THIS HONOR. We will officially honor them with their awards at the Awards Banquet on December 5. Also we are starting our new tournament season with the November tournament. The tournament will be out of Cobb’s landing on the Alabama River (upper end of Claibourne Lake). This is a really good place for fall fishing and we should have a good tournament. This is the time to get involved and compete for the “top six” spots for next year and everyone is starting “new”. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the meeting nor the tournament because I will be hunting Bambi in Nebraska, so I will have some ground to make up when I return. It has been a really great year for the Hawg Hunters and I will be looking forward to returning to fish with the group in December. One word of safety, in the cold weather, be safe and always prepare properly for any emergency (ie. Hypothermia). Until next time..Keep your hooks sharp!
