Minutes of the Meeting:

The February meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters was brought to order at
7:00 P.M. February 22, 2014
at Founaris Brothers Restaurant.
Our President Jeff Weaver presided over the meeting. There were 23 members present and 1 prospective member, George Miller, present.

Old Business:

Reading of the Minutes from the January meeting was waived by the membership. The Treasurer's report was given and accepted.

The Booray Pot has rolled over again with 20 members participating.  It will probably fall to one of you lucky Hawg Hunters during the up coming March tournament at Lake Seminole.  Same place it was won last year by Don Jahnke. See Bill Myrick for details.

New Business:

50/50 drawing was conducted and Rick Howard was the winner.  Remember you can't win if you don't buy a ticket.

We just got sad news...our fishing partner and good friend Ken Repine passed away Tuesday 25 February at 4:00pm after losing his battle with cancer.  He's gone to the big sky where  all the bass are Hawg's and bite no matter what the weather.  A service will be held Saturday time and place to be announced through the club secretary.  Let's keep Ken and his family in our thoughts and prayers.

Ken Repine

You have touched all of our hearts in one way or another.  Rest easy Brother.

The Cookouts are coming!  Get ready to Volunteer for duties to make our two day tournament a great success.  Sign up sheets will be available at the March meeting.  We'll be cooking Hambugers and hot dogs....or maybe Brat's if we can talk Dave Dyess into them again like last year.

Trails End at Lake Seminole is back open so as a club we voted to go there and try out their fine southern hospitality.

From the tournament Director:

Once again we did a great job at the last weigh-in.  Some things to remember:

-Wait for the scales to be open before bringing your fish up especially as the weather warms up.

-All bass must meet a 12 inch minimum mouth closed tail pinched and fan if necessary to avoid penalties.

-Fish River has No Wake Zones so make sure you follow the rules of the waterway.

-If you fish south of the 98 bridge at Fish River you must have a Alabama Salt Water License.

January tournament results were given out and the draw was done for partners for the February Tournament at Fish River.

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:37 pm. a whole 3 minutes longer than  last month.

From the Tackle Box...

Seminole, Wow what can be said. You can say, boy we caught them or you should have been here yesterday. As in most places around the Pensacola area I have had my time on Seminole in the past 35 years. Unfortunately for me I have been on the I should of list rather than the loaded the boat list, don’t get me wrong I have had some good times on Seminole and have won a few tournaments but I  would’t put it on my top 5 places to fish. Having said that I will share with you what has been successful for me.  First and foremost, Buzz Bait, I prefer black but there are times white is good. I like to find 4 feet of water with grass or pads with deeper water close by. I will fish the buzz bait slow through the pads, I also like to throw Horny toads and flukes.  Weightless 10 inch worms (watermelon) can also be productive.  I tend to shy away from clear water; instead I stay close to where the water starts to change color. That’s me. Now my favorite place to fish on Seminole is the river. Up down in the middle I don’t care just as long as the water is moving. Now once in the river, yes you’re thinking it, WHITE SPINNER BAIT what can I say it’s been successful. As I have always said in these articles all of us have our favorite baits and how to fish them. Take what you do mix in a little of what I do and who knows you may be getting your hand raised as the winner.  Remember to be safe on the water and respect where your fellow Hawg Hunter is fishing.

Tournament:

The February Tournament was held at Fish River at the Hwy 98 Bridge landing.  We were afraid we wouldn't get a good parking space because another club would also be fishing so we left early and sat around at the ramp for 2 hours in the dark.  At least we heard and told some good stories with the anticipation of catching a lot of fish.  Little did we know.....

The weather was warming than last month but still on the nippy side in the mid 40's but warmed up to mid 60's by the weigh-in.  We had a pretty big turn out as this was a local tournament mustering 21 Hawg hunters fishing out of 11 boats.

Tournament Results:

1st Place

Frank Kelly

After calling in sick last month Frank came back strong and healthy to win the tournament with only 1 fish tipping the scales at 4.28 pounds.  He also captured big fish money.  You could say he took the whole "kit and caboodle".    Frank's win prevented Jeff Weaver from a 3-peat.  Nice to see someone else in the winner's circle.   Now if I had more time.....I'd look up all the past records of 1st places to see if anyone has ever won a club tournament with just one fish in the past.    To my recollection in the last 5 years we haven't.   Some of you old timers may know if we have....but I'd like to congratulate Frank on his record book win.

Congrats Frank!

P.S.  Please take lessons from Buddy Yates on how to hold your fish up so we can get a better view of that monster.

2nd Place
Dave Dyess

Dave takes 2nd place honors with the most fish caught by any angler during the tournament.   He managed to find 3 keepers that weighed in at 3.57 pounds.  This second place finish will jump Dave up 6 places in the AOY standings.

Great Job Dave!

Congratulations Dave!!!

3rd Place
Kevin Simmons

Third place went to Kevin who caught 2 fish weighing 3.51 pounds.  Interesting enough the top three places were won by back seaters this tournament.  Maybe I'll leave my boat home next tournament....lol.  This also moves Kevin up 6 places in the AOY race.

Congratulations Kevin!!!

4th Place
Mack Cramer

Mack rounds out the Top 4.  He caught 2 fish weighing 3.36 pounds.  This 4th place finish turns out to be a huge deal for Mack in the AOY standings.   With Jeff Weaver and Jere Jaillite both skunking in the tournament (who'd of thought) he gained 11 points on them to put him solidly in First Place.

Great Job Mack!

Tournament Results:

This tournament was a challenge for all.  We had a total of 21 Hawg Hunters braving the 45-65 degree weather with only 9 fishermen catching fish.  Big fish honors went to our Frank Kelly who also won the tournament with his 4.28 pound beauty.  So far that's the biggest fish we've seen this season.  Those 9 fishermen brought in 13 fish to the scales.  Probably our worst tournament at Fish River in some time.  It didn't help that we had a cold front run though 2 days prior with lots of rain that really muddied up the water.  Good thing was that all 13 fish made it back safely to the water keeping the clubs fish mortality rate to zero.
As a club we averaged .61 fish per person.  At that rate it's good we threw them back as 1/2 a fish just isn't enough food for me.  As for total weight of the 13 fish was 23.61 pounds which comes out to a decent 1.8 pound per fish average.
The yellow ball remained hidden this month during the golf ball draw....Carlito, are you sure it was in the bag?

AOY Analysis

We had 8 anglers advance in the AOY standings and 13 decline.   Seems those of us who showed up still declined because we didn't catch any fish.....at least I'm in good company in the "Also Fished" category.

Well here's my suggestion for getting out of the "Also Fished" category:

1. Pull the Pin.

2. Throw it far from the boat.

3.  Net the stunned and dead fish.

Just don't do what these guys did.  They forgot step 2.  Click on the link to witness first hand what NOT to do.

Okay, so maybe that's not a good idea....How about fishing with a Net?

How about leaving the rods at home and do some hillbilly hand fishing...
