Minutes of the Meeting:

The January meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters was brought to order at
7:00 P.M. January 15, 2014
at Founaris Brothers Restaurant.
Our President Jeff Weaver presided over the meeting. There were 22 members present.

Old Business:

Reading of the Minutes from the December meeting was waived by the membership. The Treasurer's report was given and accepted.

The Booray Pot has rolled over again with 20 members participating.  The last time it was won was March of last year when Don Jahnke caught a 6.71 pound whopper at Lake Seminole.  See Bill Myrick for details.

New Business:

50/50 drawing was conducted and Buddy Yates is now a little richer. ½ to Buddy and ½ to the special fund.  Remember the special fund is what pays for all the good eats that we enjoy on our two day tournaments.  You want to eat better....buy more tickets at our meetings.

Let's keep Ken Repine in our thoughts as he and his family struggle with his illness.  If you get a chance, stop by and see him.

Looks like a couple club members have upgraded their rides.     Jeff bought Frank Kelly's  "old" Ranger and is now looking to sell his Venture.

Lee  found himself a gently used Skeeter making the upgrade from aluminum to fiberglass.   Lee's looking to sell the alumiunum one for anyone interested.

And once again Mack  has  a new Ranger.  Sorta looks like the old one he had last year....except this one runs under a cloud of blue smoke.

The Superbowl is fast approaching and once again Mack is opening his house for  us to watch the game.  The party begins at 3pm on Sunday February 2, 2014.  Contact Mack for details and be sure to R.S.V.P. so he knows how much food to cook.

From the tournament Director:

Great job to all during the weighins.  We haven't lost a fish yet!

"Remember when the fish is out of the water he's holding his breath"

Note to Boaters:   It is your responsibility to make sure your truck and boat are full of gas before the start of the tournament.  This way you have a reference of how much fuel you and your partner used during the tournament so the expense can be split fairly.

Non-boaters if you "call in sick" after the Thursday 9pm deadline remember you are still responsible for half the expenses.

December tournament results were given out and the draw was done for partners for the January Tournament at Tensaw River.

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:34 p.m.

From the Tackle Box...

Fish River, Defined by Tony Boyett as one of the best fisheries around, why you can run to wherever you want, if it so good why would you leave it? Just giving Tony a hard time. Yes Fish River is a good place to fish, but there has to be some things aligned in the stars. First and foremost you need an outgoing tide couple with moderate temps. Basically the moderate temp allows you to fish and not huddle down to stay warm. As like Tensaw I have fished this system for over 30 years and have come to the conclusion that Magnolia River is the better of the 2. The problem with Magnolia River is that you must have a salt water license, in fact anywhere you fish south of the 98 bridge you must have a salt water license so keep that in mind.

Now some suggestions on how to fish the river and what to use. I cannot express to you the importance of lure presentation this time of year, SLOW SLOW SLOW. The water temp will probably be mid-60s to mid-50s, this causes the fish to slow there movements and to be very selective on chasing food, basically they look for the easy target(slow moving baits) This translates to retrieving spinner baits at a slow role just off the bottom and close to structure. Crank baits are also good but first get the bait down (fast retrieve) then reel slow with an occasional stop and go. Now for you worm fishermen I have found that darker colored worms are more productive than lighter colored. I have also found that fishing a trick worm without a weight and allowing it to fall to the bottom can be very productive. Now take what you like to use and then try some of my suggestions and hopefully all of us will have a good day on the water, and remember always respect where someone is fishing.

Tournament:

The January Tournament was held at Tensaw River out of Cliff's Landing.  We had an uneventful caravan  to our fishing hole for the month.   Air temp was in the High 20's with Ice showing up on the boats as we arrived for launch.  This month we had 10 boats with 19 fishermen ready to tackle the cold clear weather.

Hey, at least it wasn't raining...

On to the Tournment Results:

1st Place

Jeff Weaver

Jeff finished in 1st place once again.  Back to Back wins for the December & January tournaments.  Will he do it again at Fish River in February?  In bowling that would be called a "Turkey" and in fishing we would probably call Jeff a "Turkey".  His 4 keepers weighed in at 7.05 pounds.  He never could catch the 5th one....but he didn't need it.

Great Job Jeff!!!

2nd Place
Jere Jaillite

Jere found a limit of fish weighing in at 6.37 pounds.  This makes Jere's 2nd 2nd place finish out of three tournaments fished this season.  His other was just one spot lower in 3rd place.   Last season Jere finished in the top 6 during each tournment to win the AOY race.  At this rate he's gonna be tough to beat again this year.

Congratulations Jere!!!

3rd Place
Ron Bridges

Third place went to Ron Bridges who also brought in a limit of 5 fish.  His fished tipped the scales at 5.83 pounds.  This third place finish by Ron is his best so far this year.  Looks like he's getting warmed up and just jumped up 7 places in the AOY standings. Hooyah!

Congratulations Ron!!!

4th Place
Lee Brannon

Lee rounds out our Top 4 in 4th Place.  HIs 4 fish weighed in at 4.95 pounds.  Lee showing us his Skeeter can do the job of putting him on fish.  He jumps up 6 places in the AOY standings.  Of course we are still early in the season

If you ever wondered what goes on in a Woman's Mind......here it is:

Tournament Results:

We had a total of 19 Hawg Hunters show up to fish the tournament with 15 people catching fish.  Big fish honors went to Mack Cramer with a 2.33 lb fish who beat out Jeff's 2.30 lb fish by .03 pounds which is just under a half an ounce.
As a Club we had 2 limits caught and no dead fish.  We are doing good as of 3 tournament 101 fish have been caught and released safely to be caught again.  This tournment we caught 39 fish weighing 48.70 pounds for  a 1.24 pound per fish average and a 2 fish per person average.  I'd like to know where my two fish are.  I sure could of used them.

As for the Yellow Ball we had a winner.  Randy Cole managed to magically pick the right one out of the bag.  Good job Randy!

AOY Analysis

I know it's early in the season but the race for AOY is heating up.  Enough to cause smoke....blue smoke that is.  Seems a cloud of it was following Mack as he dropped to  3rd place.  Jere and Jeff are tied for 1st place but if you invoke the Tournament rule #15  the tie would be broken by looking at who has brought in the most keeper fish during the year.  The top spot for now then goes to Jere who has weighed in 13 fish compared to Jeff's 10 fish.  Last month the top 3 were only 10 points ahead of 4th....but this time they'ed opened up the gap to 20 points.  If we don't watch out they will be untouchable. We had 10 people advance and 12 decline.  Remember you can't advance if you don't fish.
