Minutes of the Meeting:

The July meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters was brought to order at
7:00 P.M. July 16, 2014
at Founaris Brothers Restaurant.
Our President Jeff Weaver presided over the meeting. There were 22 members present and 1 guest intending to be a prospective member Michael Johnson son of none other than our very own club member Marion Johnson.

Old Business:

Jeff our Club Presidnet started out the meeting with a little humor.   Always good to have a little laugh to get things started.

Reading of the Minutes from the July meeting were waived.  The Treasurer's report was given and accepted.

The Booray Pot has rolled over from last month so the pot is starting to grow with 21 members participating.  See Bill Myrick for details.

It was great to see Frank Kelly still among us after his recent stint in the hospital.  He's looking good and feeling good....that's waht he says anyway.

Bob Jones stepped up and told us a story about Last months tournament and why he got disqualifed while fishing out of the back of Jemery's boat.   We now have an offical Slammer Award Nominee.   Jeremy Burkart is being nominated for his "Fuel Tank Swithology Knowledge".

Be sure to ask Jeremy all about it!

New Business:

50/50 drawing was conducted and Frank Kelly took the money.

Frank Dodge has some Pfluger reels for sale...contact him if you are interested.

Bill Myrick has schedules for the Old & Ugly tournaments.  I believe most of us fit in that category and would be eligible to fish the tournaments if you are interested.  Contact Bill for more info.

Changes are Due !

Proposals for changes are due at the August Meeting!   Get your changes to one of the E-board members. (perferably typed up and e-mailed).   Our Constitution and by-laws states: Changes must be submitted by the August meeting to be published in the  August Newsletter.  Discussion takes place during the September meeting for a vote to be held at the October meeting.  Remember you have to have fished 6 tournaments prior to the October meeting to be eligible to vote.

Help Wanted

Our President Jeff, after expertly presiding over the Hawg Hunters and E-board for the past 2 years, has decided to shrink back into the general membership thereby leaving an opening for the Presidents position.   Are you Presidental?  It's about time to be thinking of who will lead us through the 2015 tournament year.

(Secretary/Webmaster job is always open for the taking.)

Remember 2:00pm weigh-ins for the June, July and August tournaments.

June tournament results were given out and the draw was done for partners for the July Tournament at Perdido River.

The Meeting was adjourned at 7:36 pm.

From the tournament Director:

Mack brought up at the meeting the importance of watching your partner....no not what he's fishing but watch him for signs of Heat Stress and Heat Stoke.  These are two serious medical conditions that if not detected early can result in death.  As much as you  want to for outfishing you,  you don't want to kill your partner out there on the water.

From the Tackle Box...

Tensaw River out of Hubbard’s, I have a long history with this landing  dating back to 1979 when I fished my first Bass Tournament sponsored by then Killenger  Marine with special guest fisherman Bill Dance and I held the first and several Crippled Children’s Open Bass Classic out of Hubbard’s landing . Well enough of strolling down memory  lane.

Two things can be said about this portion of Tensaw during the month of Aug. HOT and afternoon thunder storms. However fish can be caught early before the heat drives them deep.  I like dark plastics this time of year and of course my favorite the buzz bait. I concentrate on wood  in the shallows early then move to submerged structure once the sun gets up and the shady banks are gone. Patience is the key sometimes you have to put the bait in the same location 3 or 4 times before you get the bite. The water is hot therefore like us the fish get lazy. Be persistent in prime strike zones and who knows you might catch a fish. One added note be prepared for an after the tournament lunch sponsored by Don Jahnke, Myself and Lee Brannon.  Make sure you drink plenty of fluids (Water) and remember to be safe and courteous on the water and respect where other anglers are fishing.

Tournament:

The July Tournament was a one day tournament held at Perdido River out of Seminole landing.   We had 18 members and 1 guest fishing out of 10 boats.  To me it seemed like it was going to be a repeat of last year as it was pouring down rain but at least the lightning wasn't so close this time.

Tournament Results:

1st Place

Dave Bock

Hooyah!  Yep, yours truly made it to the winners circle.  Dave had 4 fish tipping the scales at 8.07 pounds with a nice kicker weighing 3.14 lbs.  Since you all will cut me off at the meeting....I'll tell you now the pattern I found.  Rain....lots of rain.  Because of the rain and it being too dark to see my line to fish a fluke or topwater I choose to chunk and wind a white spinner bait past laydown timber.  I had my first fish at 6am with 2 more coming by 8am....all during the heavy rain.  So heavy in fact the rain shorted out my trolling motor, then my mulit-meter while trying to troubleshoot it so I had to run back to the landing for more tools.  By the time we returned the bite was gone and so was the rain.  About a half hour before weigh-in I found another keeper which as it turns out wasn't necessary.  Maybe my 5th keeper knew that as he came unbuttoned halfway to the boat just before we left for weigh-in.

This is just Dave's second win in the past 5 years he's been a dues & entry fee paying member and Oh by the way...he only needed 4 fish that day too!  Hooyah!

Congrats Dave!

2nd Place
Tony Boyett

Tony once again takes 2nd place honors this month by bringing in 3 fish weighing in at 5.29 pounds.  He took 2nd last month too.  So now Tony has been in the money twice this year and will maintain his 11th place  spot in the AOY Standings.  He could be in 8th had he been wearing his Hat and Shirt during each tournament.  At least we got a good picture of him this month!   Hooyah!  Great job!

Congrats Tony!

3rd Place
Buddy Yates

Buddy only brought in two fish .....but they were beauties weighing in at 4.89 pounds.  One of them was big enough to claim the big fish honors beating out 2 others with over 3 pound fish.  His big fish tipped the scales at 3.63 pounds.  Rumor has it he lost one that was even bigger.  This jumps Buddy up 3 places to 12th in the AOY standings.    Great Job!

Congrats Buddy!

4th Place
Mack Cramer

Rounding out the top 4 we have Mack "Tournament Director" Cramer.  His 3 fish weighed in at 3.43 pounds.  This is Mack's 5th time in the money spots out of the 9 tournaments he's fished.  Just what he needs to maintain his 2nd place AOY position.  He's now just 5 points behind 1st.  Great Job!

Congratulations Mack!

Prospective Member

Michael Johnson
Michael fished our guest tournament with us and would of took 2nd place honor's with his 4 fish weighing 7.01 pounds before deducting dead fish penalities of which he had 3.  If welcomed into the club we'll have to teach him how to keep them alive....he already knows how to catch 'em....especially during a tough rainy tournament like Perdido.  If his last name sounds familar it's because his Dad, Marion Johnson currently fishes with us.

Tournament Results:

Perdido River was a tough rainy tournament with 13 out of 18 people catching fish.  With all the rain...at least we didn't have to worry about the Heat Stress and Heat Stroke symptoms we all learned about at the meeting.  Come weigh-in time the weather cleared up and we had a great weigh-in.  Our President, Jeff, ever brought a surprise for us to enjoy during the weigh-in.  Two coolers full of watermelon for a im-prompt-to watermelon eating contest.

AND The WINNER of the contest is:

Hooyah!

Thanks Jeff.

Okay back to the tournament results.  13 of the 18 fisherment caught 25 fish for a 1.3 fish per person average.  As for average weight it comes out to 1.53 pounds per fish from a total 38.21 pounds for the 25 fish caught.   Big fish honors went to Buddy Yates with a 3.63 lb whopper.  Member wise we got to release all our fish Alive!  Great job!

We always talk about big fish honors but I would like to take a moment to talk about the smallest fish weighed in.  Looking back though this year's records seems we have a new little fish record.  Here's how it's been since the start of the season for fish under a pound.

November - Ron Bridges - 0.99 lbs
December - Carlito Silvania - 0.94 lbs
January - Jim Bailey - 0.85 lbs
May - Kevin Simmons - 0.98 lbs
July - Don Jahnke - 0.81 lbs

Little Fish honors currently goes to Don Jahnke with a ity bitty 0.81 lbs!   Don't laugh at him too much...because he also currently holds Big Fish Honors!

AOY Analysis

This month our Top 4 places in the AOY standings remained the same but the gaps are tightning up.  Jere Jaillite is still our current leader in the number one slot but Mack who is in second is closing down the gap to just 5 points now.  Jeff, maintaining the 3rd position drops back by 1 point to be now 7 points behind 2nd place.  Bill sits solidly in 4th place now 21 points ahead of 5th.    Positions 5th thru 8th now has only a 9 point spread and is up for grabs.  This month Kevin Simmons advanced up to 5th while Ron Bridges drops to 6th.  Dave Bock with his win jumps up to 7th while Dave Dyess drops down to 8th.  Rounding out the top 10 we find John Buck and Lee Brannon tied for 9th.

We had 6 people advance their standing while 7 people declined.  Biggest mover was Buddy Yates who jumped 3 places.  Remember you can't improve your standings if you don't fish.  Would help you if you caught a fish or two also.

Can Jere hold off the charge from Mack and Jeff?   Will Jeff's trip to Canada cost him the title this year?   Who will lock in the 5th and 6th spots with only 3 tournaments left for the season?  Will Jeremy lock up the Slammer Award?  Come and fish the tournaments to see.......

Does anyone ever read this far.....
