TOURNAMENT REPORT
We fished on the
Tensaw River out of Hubbard’s Landing. We had 21
members fishing and no guests. The tide was incoming until
about 9 am then it turned. Water temps held steady around
85. The clarity was stained but not bad for that part of the
Tensaw system. We had foggy conditions early and then that
was followed but bright, hot sunshine.
My partner for the tournament was Frank Kelly. He and I
decided to go up river from the landing and since we were the first
boat out, we got to the place we wanted before others
arrived. We started fishing in a long cove hoping that the
fish would be tight to laydowns with the high tide having the water
backed up. We were wrong! I did manage a small
non-keeper early on a buzz bait. There was a large willow fly
hatch and every tree was full and the pan fish were feeding
constantly. We really thought we would get some
good bites but it never happened. We fished a variety of
lures without success. About 9 am we left the place having
tried everything we could think of and went to another area above
Hubbards. About 9:30 Frank caught a
keeper on a worm. We both had numerous bites throughout the
day but they were all short bass or war mouths. We
fished hard until time to put the boat on the trailer.
At the scales, Mack Cramer grabbed the win with the only limit @7.62
lbs. This gave him the lead in the FOY race. Congratulations
Mack, nice bag on an tough day. 2nd Place went to the “New”
“BIG FISH BOB”, Bob Jones. He had 3 fish @ 7.59 lbs and lunker @ 4.56
lbs. Great job Bob! Taking 3rd was Jeff Weaver with
4 fish @ 5.64 lbs. Just when you think he is slipping. Look out because
here he comes again! Jeff and Bob did fish together, showing that their
boat did have the most fish for the tournament. 4th place
went to Dave Dyess with 2 nice fish @5.17 lbs. Good catch Dave!
As it turns out this was the worst tournament we have had in quite a
while and we had 7 members who did not weigh in a fish. On a
positive note we did not have any dead fish so congratulations to you
guys . You did a great job of keeping the fish alive through the hot
day. Most fish were caught on dark trick worms and a few were
caught on crank baits early. On the lighter side, maybe we
have a good nomination for the Slammer Award. It seems Ron
Bridges forgot to remove the tie downs from the back of his boat and
had a problem launching. When he realized the error of his
ways, he pulled the boat back up on the trailer, hooked up the front
strap then pulled the boat out and unhooked the back straps. That was
good but, then he backed his boat back in the water and forgot to
unhook the front strap so once again the boat would not get off the
trailer. With some helpful coaching from the laughing
audience he pulled the boat out again and finally got it in the water.
Next month we fish a split site with Lake Mitchell on Saturday and Lay
Lake on Sunday. We’ll be staying at Clanton so if you are
planning to go you should give Mack a call so he can get the rooms
squared away for us. See you at the meeting and hope you will
be fishing the tournament also.
Until next time “Keep Your Hooks Sharp!”
