TOURNAMENT REPORT

Escambia River
December 13, 2014
Swamphouse Landing

December found the Hawg Hunters fishing the Escambia River.  We had 18 members fishing and no guests.  The weather was cool early but warmed as the day progressed to a pleasant 65.  The skies were clear, and we had a falling tide for the day.  Water temps were around 55.  The water color was clear in the main river, and in the creeks and lakes it was almost gin clear.

My partner for the tournament was Marion Johnson.  We decided to start out in the delta areas fishing the sawgrass.  We started in Saltsman’s Cut-off and basically just fished the main run almost to the bottom of the cut.   We managed to catch a number of short fish, which came as no surprise because usually the delta fish are small but numerous.  I managed to put 2 keepers in the boat, but Marion never got a keeper.  We did have a good time fishing, and we both enjoyed the day.  I think we caught about 20-25 fish between the 2 of us, but they were mostly small.  Later, about noon, we did run up the White’s River for a time but found only small fish there too, and then we decided to return to the delta area to finish the day.  All of our fish came on worms in dark colors, black, scuppernong blue, and junebug.  We did try spinners and crank baits but never got any action on them.

At the weigh-in there were many stories of short fish and in a few cases “no fish”. Mack Cramer won the tournament with 4 fish weighing 6.34 lbs. Mack also had the lunker @2.37 lbs. Congratulations Mack for a good tournament.  Like usual, he ran upriver to the swifter water and got them with spinner baits and crank baits.  Jeff Weaver was second place with 4 fish @ 3.81 lbs.  I think he fished lakes and main river spots in the areas above Monsanto.  Third place was Cliff Armstrong with 3 fish at 3 lbs even.  He fished mostly in the delta areas in the sawgrass.  John Buck finished 4th place with 2 fish @ 2.38 lbs.  He caught his fish in the delta on dark plastics.

As far as I know, there were not any mishaps that could garner a “slammer” nomination, but rumor has it that Billy Myrick, may have something up his sleeve so that he can keep it for a 3rd straight year.  That would be a record I think.  The year is still early, and he still has plenty of time to earn it with his usual flair.

I want to thank all of those who had a part in planning and preparing the awards banquet. If you missed it, you really missed a nice fun evening.  Keep safety in mind always when on the water but especially this time of the year when hypothermia can be an issue.  Our next tournament will be January 24 on the Tensaw Delta.  This is the time of year when the bass really congregate in the sawgrass areas and provide lots of action to those who will brave the chilly mornings to go after them.  Our next meeting will be January 21, and I hope to see everyone there.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!
Until next time…
Keep your hooks sharp!
