TOURNAMENT REPORT

Tensaw River
January24, 2015
Scott's Landing

Our January tournament was held on the Tensaw River delta out of Scott’s landing.  We had 22 members fishing.  The skies were clear “high blues” and we had a steady north wind around 12-15 mph all day.  The tide was outgoing for the morning but started to move back in as the afternoon approached.  The high temp was near 55 and the water temp was around 50.  We had some recent rains and the water in the river had a heavy stain but there was some reasonably clear water to be found in some of the creeks.

My partner for this tournament was Marion Johnson.  (Yes, we drew out together last month also.  Marion was the gentleman and tolerated my inability to find good fish again!)  We started out fishing in 3 mile creek because we thought the water would be cleaner and that we could get protection from the winds, and traditionally this creek can be good fishing this time of the year..  We were right on two counts but we did not get it right of “good fishing”.  We started in the back of the creek and caught a few small fish.  Then we moved nearer the creek mouth and picked up several more, mostly small fish there.  I did manage 3 small keepers.  We got all of our bites and fish on dark plastics.  I did throw a white spinner some but never got even a nudge.  Later we tried a short time in Crab creek and then we tried a few spots in Bay Minette Basin.  I got a small fish there and we had a couple of hits.  Basically for us it was a very tough day fishing.

As usual a few find the fish.  Only problem is that is seems it is always the same few! (Maybe that should tell me something.) Jere Jaillite took the win with a 5 fish limit @7.28 lbs.  Lee Brannon had a limit@ 6.91 to take 2nd place.      Jeff Weaver grabbed the 3rd spot with a limit @ 6.32.  Carlito Sylvania took 4th with 4 fish @ 5.21.  Carlito also had the lunker @ 2.17 lbs.  Congratulation to you guys for finding and catching those fish on a very tough day.

From the talk around the scales most of the fish came from creeks and most were caught on dark plastics.  This is usually a great time for numbers in the Tensaw delta but for us it was not that good.  A few guys did catch a lot of small fish but this day even the small keepers were hard to find.

Next month we fish Fish River near Foley, Alabama.  This small river is usually hot in the winter months.  The water is usually clear and bass can be caught on a variety of lures, crank baits, plastics and spinners and top waters.  Make your plans to attend the meeting Feb 18 and fish the tournament on Feb 21.

Until next time…Keep Your Hooks Sharp!
