TOURNAMENT REPORT
September brought the Hawg Hunters to both Lay Lake (Saturday) and
Mitchell Lake (Sunday). We had 19 members fishing and 1 guest (Neil
Springstead). The weather was cool in the morning and hot in
the mid-day times. We had some fog early in places. Overall the skies
were clear and the water in Lay was stained in the mid river area and
clearer in the lower lake. Mitchel Lake was clear. Water
temps ranged from upper 70’s early to lower 80’s by the afternoon.
I drew out behind Dave Bock for the tournament. Our plan was to fish
deeper banks along the main river. We both had a few ideas of
places but it was our first time to ever fish in that part of the
lake. Bottom line is that we really had a tough day of
fishing and only managed 4 small keepers between the two of us in the
first day. We tried crank baits, spinner baits, and a large assortment
of soft plastics. The only thing we could hope for after the
first day was that maybe Sunday would be better. It was
better for Dave, but for me it only got worse. We found a
couple of fish in a place in Hatchett Creek and then we went
to Cargyle Creek and Dave caught a beautiful largemouth on a
worm in the back of the creek in a flat. That fish turned out
to be the lunker for Sunday weighing 4.97 lbs.
At the Saturday weigh-in Lee Brannon was in first place with 5 fish @
11.99 lbs. 2nd place went to Mack Cramer with 5 fish @ 10.53
lbs. 3rd place was Roger Helm with 5 fish @ 9.95 lbs. 4th
place was Dave Dyes with 5 fish @ 9.45 lbs. Bob “Bigfish” Jones had the
lunker again and also the booray fish @ 6.58 lbs. Great fish
Bob!!
Back at the hotel we all enjoyed a fish fry and everyone had too much
to eat. A special thank you for all who helped in
preparations and clean up and especially for Lee Brannon, who
took care of getting the fish and Dave Dyess who took care of getting
the extras, ie. Salads, Cole slaw and cooking oil
etc., and also for Dave Bock who brought the fryer and all the
utensils. Certainly we ALL extend our special kudos and
thanks to Brenda Weaver for fixing us the great brownies.
Day 2 took us to Lake Mitchell where we found clear waters throughout
the lake. At the scales Roger Helm brought in a nice bag of
five fish @ 10.9 lbs. 2nd was Matt Brown @ 10.4 lbs. 3rd was
Kevin Simmons with 4 fish @ 8.71 lbs. 4th place was Tony Boyette with 5
fish @ 8.59 lbw. Lunker for the day was caught by Dave Bock @ 4.97 lbs.
The final tally for the tournament was as follows:
1st Place Roger Helm @ 20.82 lbs. Great catch Roger!
2nd Place Tony Boyette @ 17.68 lbs. Never count him out… Good
showing Tony.
3rd Place Lee Brannon @ 17.52 lbs. He always seems
to have fish! Good job Lee.
4th Place Jeff Weaver @ 16.08 lbs. He will slip up on you
guys. . Nice tournament Jeff
Most fish were caught on crank baits, and soft plastics, but a few were
caught on spinner baits buzz baits and jigs. Also of concern
fellows was the high number of dead fish brought to the scales. Sure
some will die. I had a dead fish but he was hooked in the tongue and
bled out and died in 5 minutes after he was put in the
well. I just need to mention keep your pumps
running constantly in the heat because sometimes intermittent is not
enough. Check the fish hourly. All it takes is 15 seconds to
lift a lid and look to see if they are doing ok and if not then find a
way to put in fresh water and treat the water with chemicals to help
the fish survive.
The race for AOY just got tighter and it is going to come down to the
guy who can do best in the next tournament. Matt Brown has
almost sewed up Co-angler of the year in this tournament. Dave Dyess is
no longer in the co-angler race since he was a boater. Be
sure to know what you want to vote for when you come to the October
meeting and there will not be any discussion allowed, only a brief
explanation after the reading and then a vote. If you have
not paid your lodging fee be sure to bring it also because it is DUE at
this meeting.
Hope to see you all at the meeting and at the tournament which will be
held at Lake Point on Lake Eufaula.
Until next time “Keep Your Hooks Sharp!”
