Minutes of the Meeting:

The October meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters
was brought to order at 7:00 P.M on Wednesday the 19th of October at Founaris Bros. Greek Restaurant by our President John Buck. We had 22 members and one guest Alania Silvania.

Old Business:

The minutes from the last meeting were waived by the membership in order to speed things along.

The treasury report was read and accepted.

Booray Report: The pot climbed up to $356 for a 5 pound fish. (If you came to the tournament you know it was won.) See Buddy for details.

The 50/50 was won by Cliff Armstrong.

Dues need to be paid by the start of the November meeting otherwise you'll have to re-apply and fish a guest tournament.

The E-board determined that the Special Fund was NOT to be used to pay for Solo boater expenses if drawn out without a choice.  In the future those expenses shall now come out of the General Fund.

New Club Officers

Every year we ask for nominations for the Club Officers and this year we actually had two nominations for the same position of Tournament Director.   Well after much discussion and a close vote the club voted to retain Mack Cramer as our 2017 Tournament Director.  The rest of the 2017 Officers are as follows:

President:   John Buck
VP / Treasurer: Jere Jaillite
 Secretary: Dave Bock
Tournament Director: Mack Cramer
Asst. Tournament Director: Matt Brown
(Head Cook: Dave Nason)

Give them a pat on the back the next time you see them for taking an active roll in the leadership of our club.

Official Changes to our Rules

Click the following link to see how the vote tallied up for the proposed rule changes. They will go into effect starting November 2016 for our 2017 fishing season.
We had 15 voting members present so a 2/3's vote took 10 members to pass.

Did you miss out on the voting because you weren't eligible?  Well, to be eligible you have to fish 6 tournaments by the start of the October meeting.  Plan your trips wisely and try to be like Pete Potter who fished all 12 tournaments last season.  Great job Pete!

New Business:

Awards Banquet

The 2016 Awards Banquet is set.  We are going to Sonny's Barbecue.  Same great place we went to last year.  Hope to see you there on Friday night December 2nd at 6:00pm.  The price will be $16 a person for a buffet style menu of 3 meats & sides.  Drinks will be extra.  We will be collecting the money at the November meeting.  Your spouses are invited as always or any other guests you'd like to bring as long as your intentions are know at the November meeting.  Be sure to come out and honor our Top Six anglers.  They worked hard all year....or just got lucky.

From the Tournament Director:

No lights on your boat?   At blast off you'll need to stay near the landing until official sunrise.  Running  in the dark without them is against the law and our club rules say we shall follow the law or face disqualification.

Payouts were given for the September tournament. Congrats to all those who received a payout!

The draw was conducted for the October Fish Off tournament.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:17pm.

Slammer Nominee!

Frank Dodge

This month I'd like to Frank Dodge for the Coveted Slammer Award.  Frank hasn't fished with us these past 7 months but he comes back with a vengeance.

He drew out with Pete Potter and the drive over I'm told was uneventful.  However, Saturday morning at the ramp was another story.  To me it appeared to get started while Frank was backing Pete's boat down.  I guess it truly has been a while for Frank as the boat and trailer looked like a snake going down the ramp.  You know....all curvy like a side winder.

With the boat in the water, Pete pulls along side another boat at the dock to wait for Frank to park the truck.  In th meantime conversations taking place around the dock were all focused on the wind, weather for the day and the water temp.

Frank joins us at the dock and sees he'll have to cross over a boat to get to Pete's boat.  Being the true Naval Officer he is, Frank asks permission to cross the quarter deck of the first boat and then proceeds to cross. The first crossing was uneventful and expertly handled until he stepped onto the back deck of Pete's boat.  His first step went well but upon attempting to make the second step his foot hung up on his rods.  You know the ones that are sticking out by the passenger seat where all good non-boaters put them.  About to lose his balance Frank grabs for the rear pedestal seat and to his surprise removes it from the post.  I'm told, he then does a complete 360 turn with arms flailing about like a winged angel disguised as an Olympic diver before tucking his head in to springboard off the back deck head first into the water.

I'd like to take a break and tell you about those handy little things called life vests.  Because next thing we all hear on the Dock is "Poooof!" and up pops Frank from the depths of the Apalachicola River spitting and sputtering until he figures out he can stand.

Well the crowd on the dock went wild!

Awed by Frank's masterful dive the crowd of Hawg Hunters on the dock even went as far as holding up large cards with numbers on them.   Most gave him a 7 but I'm sure they would of been more generous had the sun had been out.  We truly have a masterful Olympic Diver in our mist.

Oh yea...remember that conversation we were having on the dock....well Frank then tells us the water temp is 75 degrees and the bass are eating shad!

Tournament:

The October Tournament aka Fish-Off was held to the east of us over on the Apalachicola River.  It was a two day tournament and included our annual President's Steak dinner.  This year Dave Dyess picked up Rib eye's which proved to be a great choice as Dave Nason cooked them to perfection.  If you didn't go...you really missed out!

For the tournament we had 19 club members fishing out of 10 boats.   Everyone who wanted to take their boat got to and the Top Six members going into the tournament weren't paired together.  This promised to be a good tournament, except for the cold front coming through and the wind.   Temps started out in the mornings in the mid 50's and the wind was 15 to 20 mph Friday and Saturday and actually died down on Sunday changing up the equation.   I didn't pay attention to the water temperature but I sure our Slammer nominee, Frank Dodge could tell us.

Hooyah!...on to the results!

Tournament Results:

1st Place
Cliff Armstrong

Cliff did a great job!  He caught a limit of fish on Saturday to lead the pack with 9.74 pounds come weigh-in time.  His 5 fish limit caught by 8:30am was anchored by Saturday's big fish of 3.08 pounds.  Good thing the club voted to play by the new Florida tournament exemption rules as Cliff had 2 fish in his bag that went over 16 inches.

On Sunday Cliff produced another limit.  This time by 8:05am but proceeded to upgrade 3 times more to produce the biggest sack of the tournament.  His 5 fish pushed the scales down to 10.92 pounds!

Cliff's combined 2 day total broke the 20 pound mark to settle in at 20.66 pounds.   A personal best for Cliff!    This was also Cliff's first win in the club.  He picked a great time to do it....when the pot was full of money during the fish-off.

Way to go Cliff!

Great Job!

Congrats Cliff!

2nd Place
Mack Cramer

Mack averaged over 8 pounds a day to to take 2nd place in the Fish-Off.  His 10 fish weighed a total of 16.58 pounds.  Mack has been in the top 4 quite a bit this season but this is his first time in the Bridesmaid spot.   Beat out by Cliff Armstrong of all people.

Great Job!

Congratulations Mack!

3rd Place
Dave Dyess

Dave also brought in double limits of fish with a HAWG on Sunday.  His two day total weighed 15.51 pounds.  A true Hawg Hunter being victorious with a 5.09 pound  HAWG.  This is Dave's 2nd 3rd Place finish this season and the 3rd time he's been in the money.

Great Job!

Congratulations Dave!

4th Place
Jeff Weaver

Jeff didn't even have to show up for this tournament as he already had the Angler of the Year Title in the bag but he chose to anyway and it paid off for him.  Jeff bought in to the scales over the 2-day tournament 10 fish weighing 14.90 pounds.  No stranger to the spot light this is Jeff's 9th time out of 11 he's been in the money.  Safe to say he's our all time Money leader this season as 4 of them were 1st place finishes!   Where's the IRS when we need them....

Great Job!

Congratulations Jeff!

One thing to note about the tournament is on Day one the top spots were held by the non-boaters but something must of changed the second day because only 1 remained.  Did you guys backseat your non-boaters on Sunday?  Sorta appears that way.

Since we fished in Florida we were all required to follow the rules for the exemption to the 16" Law Florida put in place.   We had 11 fish caught that were over the 16" size limit.  A 16" fish comes out weighing  just over 2.5 pounds.  Most of us only caught one over 16", but Cliff managed to catch 2 "overs" EACH day of the tournament.   I don't think he would of wanted to cull one of them for a smaller fish which by the way he had many to choose from.

AOY Analysis

Since the winner of the Angler of the Year race was locked in by JEFF WEAVER last month we only had to settle the remaining 5 spots.

Finishing up in 2nd this year is Mack Cramer with 201 points.

John Buck held off his lead of 6 points to end the season with a 3rd place finish.

Pete Potter did better than John at the tournament but not enough to over take John so he finishes up in 4th.

Jere Jaillite was 20 points ahead of 6th last month so he easily maintained his 5th place finish in the AOY race.

Drama in the race settled in at the meeting when Lee Brannon decided not to attend the Fish-off.  Meaning 6th place was wide open for the taking.  Dave Bock, Matt Brown,  Carlito Silvania, and Bob Jones were all within shouting distance of each other in points.  Except Matt decided not to go either.   So come tournament day Dave Bock, Carlito, and Bob had to get serious.  Day one saw Bob Jones jumping up and seriously closing the gap with his Saturday 2nd place tournament position while Dave held Carlito to within one position of each other.
Day two was a whole new day....remember the wind died down.  Anyway Bob fumbled, Carlito made up some points but not enough to over take Dave Bock so Dave Bock slides into the Top Six for his second time since joining the Club about 8 years back.   He finished 6th in 2010.   Hooyah!  Way to go Dave.   Sorry Lee,  I know family in the long run is really more important.

    Wow what a season!

CO-AOY Analysis:

It all comes down to the last tournament of the year for our CO-AOY race and oh by the way the club voted to keep it going for next year.  It's been fun watching our non-boaters duke it out not to mention the increased participation.

Going into the tournament Carlito was in the lead over Bob Jones by 11 points and over Cliff by 15 points.  My partner was Cliff and he figured out that he needed to win and Carlito to skunk for him to take the title.   Very rare for anybody to skunk during a two day tournament not to mention very rare for Cliff to win but anything was possible...it was a Hawg Hunter tournament.

Everybody fished hard Saturday and at the scales Cliff brought in the heaviest stringer to find himself in  first place with Bob just behind him in second.  Carlito struggled with weight but did manage to bring in a small limit putting him in 11th place for the day.  Well Cliff did his part but with Carlito catching a fish it took Cliff out of the running for the title.

Bob on the other hand zoomed passed Carlito with his 2nd place Day one finish but could he just hold him off till the final day?

Day two started differently....like no wind.  Wouldn't be a Hawg Hunter tournament if the conditions didn't change from day to day.   At the scales it turns out Bob went from "Hero to Zero".  He even let his partner Dave Dyess catch his big fish Bob is famously know for.  Bob only brought in 3 small fish while Carlito managed to squeak out another small limit.
So in the final results Carlito beats Bob 2 places to secure his Title of the
Pensacola Hawg Hunter's 2016 Co-Angler of the Year!

Great Job Carlito!

Cliff brought in another heavy stringer beating his first day stringer by over a pound to win the tournament so he takes over the Silver position dropping Bob to the Bronze position.

Great Job Guys!

Good Samaritan Award

Don Jahnke

This month I'd like to nominate Don Jahnke for the Good Samaritan Award.  Don graciously let me use his spare trolling motor when he found out I had problems with mine.   This is why I really enjoy this club and do all the things I do for it is because our club is full of people like this.  Thanks Don!

Yellow Ball Winner

Mack Cramer

Mack pulled the Yellow ball out of the bag on Sunday to win the Golf Ball Draw! Last time it was won was back in June so I'm sure the pot was built up pretty good.

Booray Winner

Dave Dyess

Dave got tired of watching the Booray pot roll over month after month so he went out and did something about it.  His 5.09 pound HAWG captures the pot of  $356 dollars plus he won Big Fish with it on Sunday.

So now thanks to Dave the pot starts over.   This time however we are now looking for a 5 and 1/2 pound fish!   Yep according to the rules Buddy put in place we go up another 1/2 pound.  If your not already in...now is the best time to join the Booray.
