Minutes of the Meeting:

The March meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters
was brought to order at 7:00 P.M on Wednesday the 21st of March at Founaris Bros. Greek Restaurant by last years President John Buck as Jeff Weaver was on Vacation in south Florida. We had only 19 members present.

Old Business

Mark Williams was voted in to the club by a unanimous vote.  Welcome to the club!

Newest Member!

The minutes from the last waived by the membership.

The treasury report was read and accepted.

Booray Report: The Booray pot started over since Lee Brannon won it last month with a 6.66lb Hawg.  But because it's springtime in Florida it didn't last very long as we have another Booray Winner during the March Tournament.   None other than Lee Brannon Again!  Back to Back Booray wins!  This month at Apalachicola Lee shows us how its done with a 7.75 pound Whopper!

Booray Winner Again- 7.75 lbs!
Lee Brannon

So the Booray pot is now OPEN again to all members as we start over.  It cost $2 per month paid  up front at the beginning of the year.  So if you are new...it will be $14 to start since we have already fished 5 tournaments this year.  See Buddy Yates for Details and maybe he'll be prepared this month.

This month's 50/50 was won by Cliff Armstrong.

Cookout duties were reminded as we promised to have another great one.  Writing this newsletter after the tournament I can tell you first hand that it was great.  Lee and Jeff did a great job at cooking the mullet and fries.  At least they didn't pull a Don Jahnke and dump the whole bag of fries ice and all into the hot oil.   I've been told that was a sight to see!  Like a fourth of July fireworks show for sure.  But all was good in fact we had more than enough fish and mullet backs since we only had 13 of us eating.  The cleanup went great too for those who helped.  If you didn't than it's your turn next month at Jordan when we do our Fried Chicken and Fixins....  Special thanks to Kim, Bill Armstrong's girl for the triple layer brownies!

New Business:

We really didn't have any new business to discuss as our club is sorta running on autopilot.   How can you mess with greatness!

From the Tournament Director:

Since we changed our accommodations to stay at Bay City Lodge we also voted to change our blast off there too.  Only made sense in the scheme of things.  Also the decision was made to stay on Central time so as to not confuse things.  You know how old people get when change occurs.

Payouts for the February tournament were handed out.   Congrats to all those who received a paycheck.
Great job!

The draw for the March Tournament was conducted with some grumblings about partners.   Remember it is the luck of the draw and no where in our rules does it state that you can't be drawn together twice in a row for back to back tournaments.  We had 8 boaters with 7  co-anglers draw out so the club will be responsible for 1/2 of  Cliff Armstrong's expenses as he was the odd boat out with no option to have a partner.   After the fact:  We stayed in 4 man cottages that were split 4 ways for the bill for most of the members.  However Cliff , Bob Jones and Dave Bock ended up paying 3 ways for their 4 man cottage.  To be fair all three should be compensated the difference for the room  based on a 4 way split.

March Tournament:

The March Tournament was held in another time zone at the Apalachicola River where we had 15 Hawg Hunters fishing out of 8 boats.  The weather was great with a warming trend starting out mid 60's to mid 70's during the day.  Saturday saw blue bird skies while  Sunday we had cloud cover.  Water temps were between 63 and 68 degrees depending on where you went.  The wind picked up each day around 10 am rising to 15 knots.

Before we go any farther let me say that I drew out Bob "Good Luck" Jones.  You know him....he's the guy that's been involved in everything that happens to every club member.    From a blown tire on my truck doing 80 miles an hour, to leaving windows  down on Tony's truck during the rain, to the numerous mechanical boat problems his partner's have, replacing water pumps, dropping 3 cylinders on the big motor, trolling motors breaking,  getting DQ'ed, running aground on and off the water even when the boat is supposed to be on the trailer.  Just ask Roger.   Anyway before picking him up and leaving for the trip I called my Insurance company to make sure everything was up to date and I even rubbed the belly of an Irish man for Luck being March and all so we could have a good trip.   Turns out it was a good trip!   Nothing happened!   I guess he really is "Good Luck Bob!"    The only thing was Bob's other name......"Big Fish Bob" didn't play out as we only found little fish.  I think Lee "Big Fish" Brannon will be taking over that name for now.

Okay so here are the stats for the Apalachicola River Tournament.  We caught 100 fish during the two days with 15 fisherman for a 6 fish per person average.  Our total weight was 139.92 pounds for a 1.39 pound average.   We had 7 limits the first day with only 5 limits caught the second day however we caught more fish the second day 57 compared to the first day of 43.

Saturday's Big Fish was caught by Thom Labelle a 2.38 pound dink compared to Sunday's Big Fish of 7.75 pounds caught by Lee "Big Fish" Brannon or was it Lee "Booray" Brannon.

We only had 4 fish weighed in that were over 16 inches and all 100 fish survived their weekend with the Hawg Hunters.  Only 2 dead fish to date this Season with 5 months in the records so far.   Let's keep it up and take good care of our catch.

Tournament Results:

1st Place
Lee "Booray" Brannon

Lee was leading the tournament on Saturday with a limit of fish weighing 7.97 pounds even before 'WOWing' us with his 17.32 pound stringer on Sunday.  His 2-day total of 25.29 pounds beat us all by 12 pounds!  Rumor has it he didn't catch his two biggest fish until an hour before weigh in on Sunday.   Probably didn't even need them.....he should of thrown them back.....oh well   Great Job Lee!  Guess what he caught them on.......Worms!

Great Job!

Once again....We are humbled in your presence!

Congrats Lee!

2nd Place
Buddy Yates

Buddy started out in 2nd place on Saturday and stayed that way for the finish.  He caught 2 limits of fish for a total weight of 13.92 pounds.  Rumor has it he was culling while his partner was struggling to catch a keeper.
This is Buddy's second time this year in Second Place.  Of the 4 tournaments Buddy has fished he has a 100% success rate of bringing 5 fish up to the scales each tournament day.  30 out of 30.  For you mathematicians....that's 2- one day tournaments at 5 each and 2-two day tournaments at 10 each.
In Bowling when you max out 3 in a row it's called a Turkey so when you max 4 in a row like Buddy has is it a Double Turkey?  Sounds good to me....Buddy "Double Turkey" Yates!

Great Job!

Congratulations Buddy!

3rd Place
Roger Helm

Roger once again made the trip from way over in Jacksonville to be with us for the weekend.  Great to see you again....but it's getting old you keep taking our money.  Just kidding.....Great job!  This is Roger's 2nd time in two tournaments he's placed in the money slots.  Last month 2nd this month he's Third with a double limit weighing in at 13.30 pounds.

Great Job!

Congratulations Roger!

4th Place
Jeff Weaver

Jeff was one fish short of double limits but still good enough to capture his second 4th place finish of the season.  His 9 fish totaled 11.90 pounds.   Since he was a non-boater this time fishing out of the back of Lee "Worming" Brannon's boat I'm surprised  he managed that.  Goes to show what a great fisherman Jeff is.

Great Job!

Congratulations Jeff!

AOY Analysis:

5 tournaments done and in the record books with 7 more to go!  This month fresh off a back to back win Lee Brannon adds 6 more points to his lead to be ahead of the pack by 16 points.  Gonna be real hard to catch him as Lee has been on fire ever since putting his boat in the ditch up at swift creek.  "click here for a visual of that luck turning incident for Lee "Ditch" Brannon."

Staying in Second this month is Jere Jaillite now 16 points behind.  Jere finished 7th this tournament but has opened up a gap of 8 points behind him.
Jumping up to 3rd is Jeff Weaver with 80 points.  Penalized 2 points for missing the meeting Wednesday night.
Also jumping up is Buddy Yates from 6th last month to 4th place this month.  He's only 1 point behind  Jeff.    Buddy has climbed the leader board from 20th to 13th to 6th to now 4th in the last 4 months.  He's on fire!
Maintaining 5th place is Dave Dyess who had a stringer on Sunday that beat everyones on Saturday.  Only problem was he skunked on Saturday....Day late and a dollar short!
Dropping to 6th this month is Mack Cramer who missed out on all the great fun at Apalachicola.

So here's the point spread of the Top Six:

1st - Lee Brannon - 104 pts
2nd - Jere Jaillite - 88 pts
3rd - Jeff Weaver - 80 pts
4th - Buddy Yates - 79 pts
5th - Dave Dyess - 73 pts
6th - Mack Cramer - 69 pts
7th - Dave Bock - 68 pts

Great job to the Top Six!

CO-AOY Analysis:

On the Co-Angler side Thom Labelle reclaims the number 1 spot with 63 points while Brian Nall brings up second with 57pts.  Meanwhile Dave Nason drops to 3rd as he didn't fish with us this weekend.  Hope he caught some giant bass down in Mexico with Mack and Tony.

Slammer Nominees:

We could of had a couple slammers this month but it will be hard to beat Roger's "No Strap" Helm's incident last month.
Click this link for a reminder.

Two honorable mentions that I know of is Buddy culling fish when he reached the number 4 instead of 5.  Seems he caught his 5th fish then reached into the live well and threw out his smallest one.  Eager I guess to get the culling started.   Lucky for him he realized it and was able to recover from his actions.
The second honorable mention was Roger who also had a problem with culling....seems he did it backwards.   Threw the bigger one back and kept the smaller of the two.  He wasn't able to fix his mistake  as he didn't catch another keeper the rest of the day.  When if was all said and done he missed second place by a half of a pound but I don't believe the fish he threw back was that much bigger.
Oh well there is always next month!
