Pensacola Hawg Hunters

2019 Season

Volume: 22

Minutes of the Meeting:

The September meeting of the Pensacola Hawg Hunters started a little early at 6:30 pm on the 18th of September so we could discuss the proposed changes to our rules and constitution. President Jeff Weaver presided over the chamber of discussion. We had 27 members present including our newest member Quintin Mengerink.

Old Business

Jeff started us out with a little humor to liven up the place. Great Job Jeff!

The minutes of the meeting was waived by the membership as our Secretary was absent. We should fire that guy…. Anybody what to step up?

The Treasury report was read and accepted. It sounded like just a bunch of numbers but the payouts for the Fish Off should be good.

The Booray pot is still growing as no one has managed to capture a 6 pound bass. Remember at the start of the new season we will need to kick in another $24 per person and it needs to be paid up by the November meeting. Each month $2 per person is added to the pot. See Buddy Yates for details.

The 50/50 drawing was conducted by Natalie with $53 going to the club while Randy Cole ran off with the other half.

New Business:

Nominations for the new Officers were presented by the e-board. The following members are hereby nominated:

President – Kevin Simmons
Vice President / Treasurer - Tony Boyett
Tournament Director – Mack Cramer
Asst. Tournament Director – John Russell Buck
Secretary / Webmaster – Dave Bock

The nominations are still open if you want to take a postition on the E-board. We will vote the Officders in at the October meeting.

The October tournament President’s appreciation cookout is all set up. Dave Dyess graciously volunteered to get the food for the Steak Dinner. Did you know Dave has been doing this for the better part of 25 or more years now? Thanks Dave!

Thanks again for Tony and his wife for hosting the Cookout last month at Hubbard’s landing. Great Job!

Proposed Rule Changes:

8 Proposed Rule changes were discussed with two minor amendments to them.

The one amendment to Mack’s proposal is to remove “or” and replace with “and”.
It should read:
The webmaster will receive free annual dues per quarter “and” he may elect to be a boater for the year, this selection must be made at the beginning of the year.

The one amendment to John Buck’s proposal will be remove line b.
“The provisions of tournament rule 5a will not apply to the Tournament Director.”

Voting will take place at the October meeting with only clarification. No discussion!!

We have 17 members who have fished at least 6 monthly club tournaments to date and they all will be elibible to vote if they are present at the October meeting.

Here’s a link to see the proposed changes that were submitted.

Awards Banquet:

The annual Awards Banquet is all set! We are going to "Wined and Dined" at the finest of establishments the Hawg Hunters could get. The Sonny’s Barbeque pit on Navy Blvd! Mark your calendars for great time on Friday night December the 6th at 6pm.

Small Newsletter Correction:

Last month I mistakenly reported that John Shaeff's Big Fish was his first one in the Club. Well looking farther back in the records I found where he weighed in a 9 pound 6 ounce Hawg caught in June of '82 on Lake Juniper fishing out of the back of Pete Potter's boat. Great Job John!

From the Tournament Director:

Payouts were given for the August Tensaw River tournament and the draw for September was conducted. The Hawg Hunters in true fashion would be hitting Fish River with 9 boats carrying 17 members.

There was a recommendation to change the weigh-in to 1pm for the September tournament however the motion failed and the weigh-in will remain at 4:00pm for Saturday's tournament.

The caravan was set for the Publix on 9 mile road at 4:15am

The meeting was adjourned at 7:59pm

Our September Tournament this year was a one day'er held at Fish River. We had 17 members willing to brave the heat for a 4pm weigh-in. It really wasn’t too bad. Temps in the morning started out in the mid 70’s then pushed up through to the high 80’s by 4pm. It was clear then cloudy with some rain on the southern part of the river. A little after 1pm the bluebird skies showed back up.

Water temps were around 83 most places we fished with the cleaner water up north. The tide was high at the start and dropped out by weigh-in.

At the scales everyone seemed to have struggled to find a keeper fish. Just like last month there were no limits caught. Only ten out of seventeen members caught fish. Club total was 15 fish. Club weight was only 17.93 pounds. This wasn't our worst tournament this year. That one was back in November when 8 brave souls caught 8 lonely fish at Miller’s Ferry.

Big Fish was caught by Dave Bock. His lunker tipped the scales at 2.07 pounds. Dave now has 10 Big Fish wins on his belt with 3 of them right there at Fish River. This one is his smallest Big Fish win but not the smallest Big Fish this year. Terry Smith holds that honor for the club. He caught a 1.76 pound lunker also at Fish River back in January which holds the record for the smallest Big Fish caught at Fish River in the last 10 years. The biggest Big Fish at Fish River was a 6.89 pound Hawg caught by Lee Brannon during last year’s September Tournament.

So know you have to ask: Who has the smallest Big Fish caught in one of our tournaments? Well that would be Mack Cramer with a 1.25 pound fish caught at Tensaw way back in August of 2008. There were actually 12 Big Fish caught that were smaller than Dave’s 2.07 pound largemouth over the last ten years.

First Place

1st Place

First place is Quintin “The FNG” Mengerink! The newest member of our Club. He was voted in Wednesday night just prior to the draw and look at him now. Last month he must have held back during his guest tournament. Did we just invite a dead ringer into our mist? Or maybe it was his “Luck of the Draw” as he pulled our current Top Angler Jeff Weaver out of the hat. Quintin most of us have waited years to win one of our club tournaments and you did it on your first try!

Great job!

Congratulations Quintin!

Second Place

2nd Place

Second Place went to Dave Bock. Surprise..Surprise! Dave struggled all day but managed to catch two fish. One being the The Big Fish of the Tournament. He caught it at 1:05pm so for those of you who voted for keeping the 4pm weigh in…Dave Thanks You! This is Dave’s first time in the money slots this season but he has been consistent though out the year. Catching fish in 9 out of 9 tournaments he’s entered this year.

Great Job!

Congratulations Dave!

Third Place

3rd Place

Third Place was Jeff Weaver who managed to catch two fish when Quintin wasn’t looking. Come to think of his Jeff and his partner Quintin brought 5 out of the 15 fish weighed in. It seems like they found all the action during a tough tournament. This is Jeff’s third 3rd place win this season. He has yet to place higher this year but that don’t matter as he’s leading the Angler of the Year Race. His consistency of catching fish is what matters. He’s currently Best of the Club with 11 for 11 in bringing fish to the scales. Runner up is Lee Brannon with 10 for 10 and then there’s Kevin Simmons, John Buck and Dave Bock with 9 for 9.

Great Job!

Congratulations Jeff!

Fourth Place

4th Place

Fourth Place is Terry Smith who also caught 2 fish during a real tough tournament. He had the honor of helping Tony Boyett break in his new Blazer Boat. When I saw them Terry was fishing out of the front seat. So did Terry “Front Seat” Tony or “Back Seat” him as Tony zeroed in his first Hawg Hunter Tournament with his new boat. Anyway this is Terry’s first money slot this year.

Great Job!

Congratulations Terry!

AOY Analysis:

Place Top Six Hawg Hunters Points

Looks like our Top Six players are set. We only have one more tournament to go to see how they will shake out. The current 7th place holder, Dave Bock, is 18 points behind and at this point it would take a miracle for him to gain access to the Top Six this year. Sort of like the miracle he pulled off this month, 2nd Place with Big Fish Honors. Who’d of thunk it with only 2 fish?

Jeff is leading the Angler of the Year Race and has put himself in a good position to win. He’s 7 points ahead of Lee. All he has to do is finish the Fish Off no farther behind Lee than 6 positions. A top six finish in the Fish Off would cement Jeff in.

2nd Place Lee Brannon is currently 7 points behind Jeff and 11 points ahead of 3rd Place. Lee has a chance of winning but the odds are against him unless Jeff doesn’t fish the Fish Off. Can you say Long Shot? When you look back at this past season Lee missed one tournament back in February and it might just have cost him a chance at “back to back” Angler of the Year titles.

Maintaining his 3 place spot is John Russell. He’s 11 points back from Second Place and 18 points out of the lead. It looks like he won’t be able to win the Angler of the Year Title but he still has a slim chance of jumping up to Second Place. He should worry more about keeping his spot as 4th Place Kevin Simmons is only 3 points behind.

Kevin jumped over Mack this month to claim the 4th Place spot and next month he has a great chance of jumping up another spot to 3rd but that’s about the best he can do. 2nd Place for Kevin is too far away at 15 points.

Dropping down to 5th place is Mack who’s now 7 points behind Kevin and 6 points ahead of John Buck.

John Buck is rounding out our Top Six Anglers with 145 points. Far enough ahead of 7th Place Dave Bock who has 127 points that he’ll stay in the Top Six. The question is will he be able to jump up and over Mack to claim fifth or stay where he is.

So you see it’s not over yet however the Top Six guys have pretty much been set. Just a question of who gets what spot. Don’t order the trophies yet.

Great job to the Top Six!

CO-AOY Analysis:

Place CO-Angler of the Year Race Points
Gold

Silver

Bronze

The Co-Angler of the Year title was captured last month by John Russell Buck. Congrats John Russell on a great year. Looks like you won’t quite capture the Angler of the Year title also but you gave it a hell of a shot. You get the Gold!

Jumping up to the Silver position is Terry Smith this month. He went from 3 points behind to 9 points ahead the other Terry. Great Job!

Rounding out our Top Three Co-Anglers is Terry Ferdinandt. But don’t you slow down Terry as Dave Nason is only 2 points behind you with Brian Nall another 6 points back.

Fish Off:

Next month we will be going to Lake Mitchell in Alabama for the Fish Off. Words of Wisdom for Lake Mitchell! Make sure you have a fishing license and for you boaters check you safety equipment. Flares, fire extinguishers, life vests, whistles, air horn. There's a local game warden up there who love's to come check you out. See you there!

Fish Off Eligiblity:

If you’ve fished at least 5 tournaments this season and fish the fish off you are eligible for fish off monies to be paid if you finish in the Top Ten. Entry fees will be $30 for the two day tournament plus $5 for each tournament you’ve missed to bring you up to 12 tournaments. Contact Dave Nason for the exact amount you owe.

If you didn’t know here is the breakdown of your entry fee in each of our Tournaments. On a one day tournament the fee is $25 of which $15 goes toward the current tournament while $5 goes toward Big Fish and the remaining $5 goes toward the Fish Off. On a two day tournament it's another $5 to total $30 to pay for the second day Big Fish. We pay Big Fish for each day of every tournament.

So for the Fish Off being a two day tournament it comes out to $30 plus the $55 total which was collected over the previous 11 months at $5 each month. Thereby if you are eligible to fish the Fish Off you will need to make up $5 for each month you missed paying. Of course you don’t have to. You could just pay your entry fee of $30 and still fish with us. It’s sort of two tournaments in one a normal club tournament and a Fish Off tournament for eligible members. The normal club tournament will pay the top 4 spots while the fish off will pay the top 10 spots.
