Pensacola Hawg Hunters

2022 Season

Volume: 25

Minutes of the Meeting:

The March meeting of the Hawg Hunters was brought to order at Fournias Brothers restaurant by our President John Buck. 15 members graced us with their presence. We started at the meeting at 7:00 pm.

Old Business

The minutes from last meeting were read and accepted.

The treasury report was also read and accepted by the membership.

Nobody has come close to catching the 5.5 pound bass needed to win the Booray so we will keep adding to the pot.

The 50/50 was won by Dave Bock.

Club Hats: We had a lively discussion on club hats. About the only thing we could agree upon by a majority was the color. We can’t get the teal color anymore so we voted by majority to go with a White hat. We want something to stand out so we can see you on the water. Now if you’ll just wear the club hat while fishing instead of just at the weigh-in it might work. If we do order hats…..we need max participation to purchase one or two because there is a setup fee for production that John Buck was willing to pay one time.

Looks like the two options for the hats are a solid back Twill material with embroidered club logo for $30 and a Cotton material with embroidered club logo for $25. We questioned how much for a stencil instead of embroidery. There will be more to follow on this. We also discussed like the federal government would that we should retire all the old club hats to force purchase of the new ones in order to get your “hat shirt points”.

Club Web Page: Our webmaster Dave, worked out a deal where we can share the expenses of the hosting required to store and display our website. Instead of paying $12 a month he was able to drop the club cost down to $4 a month. The club voted by majority to sign up this deal for 4 years for a total club expenditure of $192. Our domain name www.pensacolahawghunters.com is a separate expense from the hosting but we are not up for renewal on it until August of 2026. Good job Dave you’ve saved the club close to $400 in expenses.

New Business

Duties were assigned for the March cookout of hamburgers and hotdogs. Thanks to those who stepped up.

From the Tournament Director:

The payouts for the February Fish River tournament were handed out.

The draw was conducted for the 2-day Lake Mitchell, Alabama tournament. We drew out 9 boaters with 4 co-Anglers.

Meeting was adjourned 7:47 pm.

March’s tournament was a two-day tournament held on the Coosa River at a place called Lake Mitchell. Putting Dam’s up and down the Coosa River back between 1912 and 1928 created the series of lakes. For most of us about a 200 mile trip from Pensacola. The club caravan was stretched out over a two day period before the start of the tournament. Some of us were leaving Thursday, while others of us were leaving Friday during various times of the day. Despite this everyone made it safely up to the lake. Oh and we also had a long line of thunderstorms that passed up the Hwy 65 corridor Friday mid-morning.

Saturday morning we started out with the temps at 49 degrees and partly cloudy skies. The wind picked up later in the day and the current was flowing on the main river. Water temps were mid to high 50’s. On Sunday it was a little cooler as most of us had frost on our covers with the temps starting around 40 degrees. As we neared the lake there was a heavy fog bank coming up off the river that didn’t clear out until after 8:30. At blast off we all took it easy getting to our first spots through all the soup. I went fast enough just to keep my boat up on plane and luckily didn’t run into anything or anyone.

On Saturday the club weighed in 51 fish out of a possible 60 with 10 members catching limits. Total weight was 73.24 pounds. Lee Ferrell had mechanical issues most of the day and didn’t get to fish very long. Big fish honors Saturday went to John Russell with a 2.95 pound fish. Good Job John Russell! Heavy Stringer on Saturday and for the whole weekend was 9.68 pound limit caught by Tony Boyett.

Sunday the club also caught 51 fish with a little heavier weight of 74.72 pounds. We had only 8 limits Sunday. Big Fish Sunday was a 3.03 pound Spotted bass caught by Lee Ferrell. Good Job Lee #2! We had only one fish over 3 pounds caught which is sort of unusual for a March tournament on the Coosa River Chain. It seems there was plenty of small fish to go around. Mack even managed to catch a limit of spots that weighed only 4.35 pounds. My partner Dave Nason and I started out early catching those same size limits of fish but managed to upgrade numerous times to squeak out 6 to 6.5 pounds each day.

We had 3 guests fishing with us this trip. One was Terry Ferdinandt who managed to catch two nice limits of fish. 7.14 pounds on Saturday followed up by Sunday’s heavy stringer of 9.43 pounds. If he was still a member his 16.57 pounds would have been good enough for 2nd Place.

Our Second guest Veronica Buck (John Russell’s significant other) fished on Sunday and found a limit of 5 fish weighing 5.36 pounds. Great Job!

The Third guest we had was Tina Whitworth who fish with Tony Boyett. She brought 2 fish to the scales on Sunday weighing 1.83 pounds. I heard she caught a limit on Saturday but was releasing them before weighing. I guess she didn’t want to show up Tony.

All in all…plenty of fish caught over the weekend just no real size to them almost like a Lake Martin Tournament.

The cookout was a great success! Thanks to Carlito, Dave Nason and Terry Smith for braving the smoke and heat from the grill we enjoyed fresh cooked Hamburgers and Hotdogs. We also had Conecuh Sausage donated by Lee Ferrell. They were great! Thanks Lee! John Buck organized the entire food gathering probably assisted by his wife Bonnie who he brought along this trip. Jeff weaver didn’t bring his wife but he brought the next best thing…..her homemade brownies! Thank You!

Tournament Results:

First Place

1st Place

First Place is finally someone other than Lee Brannon. Lee slipped on his sword and left the door open for Tony Boyett to win! Tony led the first day with 9.68 pounds then followed it up with another nice stringer of 8.62 pounds. Winning weight for Tony was 18.30 pounds.

Great Job!

Congratulations Tony!

Second Place

2nd Place

John Russell caught nice limits both days. 8.52 pounds Saturday followed by 7.75 pounds on Sunday for a total weight of 16.27 pounds. I guess bringing the family fishing with you really helped out. I hope you enjoyed your weekend and made lasting memories.

Great Job!

Congratulations John Russell!

Third Place

3rd Place

Looks like Jeff Weaver gets back to back Third Place finishes. He finished 3rd last month and earned himself another 3rd place this month. 4 out of 5 times he’s taken more money than his put in. Jeff caught 8.05 the first day and finished it off with 7.88 pounds the second day for a total of 10 fish weighing 15.93 pounds.

Great Job!

Congratulations Jeff!

Fourth Place

4th Place

Carltio fished with Lee Brannon all weekend and managed to catch more weight than Lee both days thereby pushing Lee out of the top four money slots. His total was less than a pound more but good enough to capture Fourth Place. Carlito’s had 7.87 pounds Saturday and 7.20 pounds Sunday for a combined weight of 15.07 pounds. This is Carlito’s first time this season making it to the Top Four Showcase.

Congratulations Carlito!

AOY Analysis:

Place Top Six Hawg Hunters Points

This month we lose one and gain one in the Top Six. Bill Armstrong drops after a poor tournament where he only managed 1 fish. He must have had Mexico on his mind. Bill also appeared to have the only Largemouth caught while the rest of the club was catching spotted bass like they were going out of style. You picked the wrong species Bill. The Coosa river system is known for its Spots.

In First Place this month we still have Lee Brannon who is actually getting farther away from the pack. He doubled the spread to 10 points ahead of Second.

Mack stays in Second Place this month but his 8 point lead over Third Place last month was wiped out. Mack managed only 8 fish for the weekend. His 3 fish on Sunday weighed 4.59 pounds but that beat his 5 fish limit on Saturday of 4.35 pounds.

John Russell was Third last month but now has enough points to tie Mack for Second this month. Both John Russell and Mack are just 10 points behind First Place Lee Brannon. If you guys could just get Lee to stay home for one month.

Jeff Weaver maintains his Fourth Place standing and is now only 3 points behind.

John Buck jumps up into the Top Six and is now tied with Dave Bock with 75 points for the Fifth Place spot. John’s only fished 4 out of the 5 tournaments Dave has fished but John had two Second place finishes along with two Sixth Place finishes.

As mentioned Bill Armstrong does drop out of the Top Six but he’s really only 1 point away from getting back in. He now has 74 points. At least now it’s been reported he has plenty of keys after his Slammer nomination last month.

CO-AOY Analysis:

Place CO-Angler of the Year Race Points
Gold

Silver

Bronze

We have the same 3 Co-Anglers in the top 3 spots as last month Carlito, Terry Smith and Dave Nason. It seems I’ve mentioned them three together before…..oh yea they were the Grilling team at the Cook out. Thanks again guys!

Carlito has increased his lead to 12 points over Terry Smith while Dave Nason reduced the gap to Second by just 7 points.

Yellow Ball Winner!

To pull a golf ball you have to catch a fish. During the draw we start with the smallest weight and go up from there. Well this month Mack was one of the first to get to draw a golf ball and managed to pull out the Yellow ball robbing us all a chance to try!
Thanks Mack!

Zero to Hero Nominee:

Most of us end up going from Hero to Zero but this month we are going the other way with Tony Boyett. He goes from skunking last month to First Place this month. So Tony gets the Zero to Hero mention this month!
Good job Tony!
