TOURNAMENT REPORT
NOVEMBER 20, 2004

After The Hawg Hunters held their November tournament at Millers Ferry on the Alabama River. This was the first tournament of the new competitive season. We had 20 fishermen and 1 guest. The temps were in the low-mid 60's and the water temp was near the same. The river was about 2 feet high and we had good current most of the day. Water color was really good with a slight stain in the main river. The morning found us in thick fog. Cloudy skies held for the day and strong rain for the entire afternoon.

My partner was the guest, Rich Renner. Rich was a member several years ago before he was transferred to North Carolina by the Marines. He's made it back from Baghdad and wants to get back to fishing with us. Rich and I enjoyed fishing together and he really put a whoopin' on me this day. It was one of those days when I took him to the fish, and I caught the small ones while he caught the good ones! We started off fishing deep river banks with laydowns and he quickly had 4 fish before I got my first hit. He was throwing a black and blue worm that I didn't have and that seemed to make a big difference. Once he had used them up he quit catching fish. However he was able to have a nice limit by 8:30 AM which would have gone over 12 lbs if he had been able to weigh them in for the tournament. He made the worm work in coves also. By the days end he had caught 8 nice keepers and 4 shorts. I had 4 small keepers and 8 shorts. Early on he caught his fish on the worm mentioned earlier and in the afternoon I caught my fish on a brown splatter-back Bandit 300 series.

At the weigh in everyone had fish. Most had at least 4 and many had limits. In fact there were 11 limits brought to the scales. Even though there were a lot of fish, most were small, just keepers (12-13 inches). Most of the guys said they caught their fish on worms (assorted dark colors) and chartreuse colored crank baits. There were several surprises at the scales. Perhaps the biggest was Ken Repine. Ken was fishing behind Rich Cornelius and brought in 5 nice keepers for 9.15 lbs to take the win. This was Ken's first ever win in a tournament. Congratulations Ken*way to go!! Second place was shared by Jere Jailitte and Wayne Thomley. Wayne brought 4 nice fish to the scales weighing 7.05lbs. Wayne also had the lunker which weighed 4.25 lbs. I keep trying to remind him that he needs to be hunting this time of the year, but he keeps showing up and catching good fish instead of looking for Bambi. Jere had his 2nd big finish in a row with his showing. Looks like he might be starting a trend. Speaking of trends, it seems that some of the non-boater partners are starting to kick butt on a regular basis. It sure happened to several of us this weekend and also on the last tournament. Sliding deftly into the 4th slot with a bag of 4 fish weighing 6.8 lbs was Rich Cornelius. While all gave their rain suits a test of durability, everyone seemed to have a good time fishing as the fish, even though small, seemed to be feeding well.
The December tournament is scheduled for the Tensaw delta out of Mizells Fish Camp.
Make sure to fish this one as the cooler days can be really productive in the lower Tensaw delta region.
