Tournament Report

The Hawg Hunters fished Lake Jordan near Wetumpka, Alabama for the April tournament. We had 10 fishermen and 1 guest (Danny Lopez), looking for the elusive green fish. This was the first time the Hawg Hunters had ever fished Lake Jordan and all were looking forward with a lot of anticipation of catching a bunch. The weather did not play in our favor. We had thunder storms and tornado watches in the area on Friday night, and rain lingering through the night. The back side of the front took most of the day Saturday to pass and left us with cooler temps and a strong ridge of high pressure that brought glowing blue bird skies on Sunday. The water temp ranged from 65-67 which was really good and the clarity varied from very clear in the lake to slightly stained up the river.

My partner for the weekend was Bob Hanson …aka "Big Fish Bob". He got this name several years back from his ability to catch big fish from the back of the boat. Bob and I started out fishing near the launch site with top water lures but had no success. We then switched to trick worms fishing the deeper water. I spotted a small pod of shad behind the boat and pointed it out to BFB who promptly threw a shakey head jig into it and pulled out a 4.16 lb spot. Big Fish then proceeded to catch another spot but it was just a keeper. He had me 2 to zip. I got on a bite and caught the rest of the fish for the day. I had a limit and culled a couple, basically giving BFB a good kick in the bottom for the day. I say it this way because there's another part to the story, later.

At the scales we found most everyone had fish to show. I was in 1st place with a little over 12 lbs, and Jere was in 2nd with a shade over 10lbs.
Lee, Jeff, Kevin, and Dave were still in the hunt also just behind Jere. No one really had a lock on the tournament.

That evening we all gathered at a local steak house and had a great meal and social time. Dave Dyess brought his brother Charles, by to eat with us. We all enjoyed the good time and fun fellowship over a good meal. By the time we were done, we were all ready to head to the motel and get some sleep in preparation for the next day.

Day 2 began with high blue skies, no wind, cooler temps, and a strong high pressure dome. This is the kind of day most of us hate as fishing under this condition is usually very tough. Today would be no different. We couldn't buy a bite at any spot we fished the day before. I finally caught 2 small keepers to start the day. I made the comment to Bob that he had done the same thing to me the day before and I hoped the tables didn't turn on me. They did. BFB got down to business and gave me a lesson on fishing shakey head jigs. He put 4 nice spots in the boat before I caught my 3rd and last small fish. I guess "tourney about " is fair play!

At the scales there were plenty of long tired faces as there were few fish to be seen. My 3 small keepers were just enough to give me 1st place with a total of 16.75lbs. Jere Jaillite made an excellent run only to fall short by .08 lbs with a total of 16.67lbs for 2nd. The 3rd slot went to Lee Brannon who finished with 15.79lbs. Big Fish Bob vaulted strongly into the 4th slot with a total of 13.81 lbs. Jeff Weaver had the lunker for the day, a 3plus lb spot. Although Sunday was tough fishing the tournament was still pretty good. We had no "also fished" for the weekend as everyone had fish to show. We averaged 11.68 lbs per man. That's pretty good when you look at our normal per man average. Most of the fish were caught on trick worms and finesse worms both t-rigged and on jig heads, and some were caught on spinner baits and flukes. I caught my fish on green pumpkin trick worms fished on spotsticker jig heads and on t-rigs fished very slowly. We never caught a fish in any place where I had caught fish before.
We had to hunt for them here and there. Our fish came from about 15-20 feet of water near points and around boat docks.

Next month our tournament is May 24 at Miller's Ferry. It is a one day tournament. Miller's Ferry has been good to us in the past during May and I hope that this time will be good also. Make your plans to attend both the meeting and the tournament.
