PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
AUGUST 30, 2008

Our regular tournament was rescheduled due to tropical storm Fay. Ha….what a blow hard it was. Much ado about Nothing!
But, better to
err on the side of caution and safety. We headed out for Holly Creek on the Alabama, River for the tournament on Saturday, August 30. This was our last "short day" tournament of the year. The rains that we expected hit farther north and by our tournament day the river in the
Holly Creek area was flooding. Dave Dyess made a trip over on Friday morning to check to see if it was viable for the tournament considering
the conditions. A quick look was all it took for him to make a call. He moved the tournament to Scott's Landing on the causeway.
While
this is not optimum for summertime fishing, it was the best option considering the water conditions.
At least the delta allows the flood
water to spread, and with the extreme high water upriver this was the best call.

Frank Kelly and I drew out as partners and after some major league adjustments to our plan we decided to try areas around Bay Minette basin
and areas that offered some protection from the heavy current in the main delta rivers. My initial plan was to work black/yellow sally and
either junebug or black worms. I also had a fluke to use for deeper penetration of the grassbeds if we could find them.

We started in a cut just off the main river but found nothing so we left and tried Bay MInette Basin. I immediately caught a dink and thought we might be on to a bite…..WRONG! We worked our way to Yancey Bayou and Frank was able to get 2 small keepers in the boat on a red shad finesse worm. I was able to catch a small flounder and that was basically it for us. We worked hard in tough heat for very little.

Back at the scales Jere Jaillite had 4 fish for 3.46 lbs. to take 1st place. His partner Billy Myrick had 2 fish @2.06 for 2nd place. Frank Kelly had 2 fish @ 1.82 to take 3rd and Mack Cramer took 4th with a fish @ 1.25 lbs. His fish was also the lunker!

Jere and Billy said they caught their fish on cranks and worms, Frank, and Dave caught theirs on worms, and Mack found a lot of numbers but few keepers on DOS shrimp lures.

The Hawg Hunters have had two miserable tournament performances in a row, July and August. I hope that our September site will prove much better. We will be fishing the Alabam River out of Swift Creek, and it will be a 2 day event so make your plans now.
Don't forget that Alabama licenses expire on Aug 31.
