PENSACOLA HAWG HUNTERS
TOURNAMENT REPORT
JANUARY 19, 2008

The Hawg Hunters fished out of Scott's Landing on the Mobile Causeway for the January tournament. The weather was furious at the start of the tournament, with cold temps, strong winds, and heavy rain. Fourteen guys braved the elements on this dreary morning.
The forecast for the rest of the day was rain until late morning and then strong winds from the NW and falling temps.

Billy Myrick and I were drawn as partners. We started out fishing small creeks off the Tensaw River. After a cold wet run we settled in for what we hoped would be a good day for delta bass. After only about 15 minutes I caught a short fish, and soon thereafter, Billy hooked up with 2 nice keepers only to have them come unbuttoned at the boat. We fished for about another hour, and he caught a decent keeper.

About 10:30 AM a club member called to say that most of the guys had had enough and were calling it quits for the day. I was told there were only 2 boats left out fishing and that all the others had gone home. I contacted Mack Cramer and Lee Brannon (the other boat left) and they both had fish and wanted to keep fishing and so did we. The rain basically stopped about 11:00 and the day got much more pleasant.

About 12:30 I missed a good hit and threw back and got lucky as the fish hit again. This time it was a keeper. Billy and I continued fishing and got a few other hits but did not boat any more fish. We called Mack and Lee and told them we were all that were still fishing, and being the only members left agreed to quit early at 2:00 PM.

We arrived at the launch to find the incoming tide had started to run and that made for very little problems loading up the boats. We held a short weigh in using digital hand scales since no other scales were available. Lee Brannon took 1st place with 3 fish @ 7.4 lbs. His partner, Mack Cramer took 2nd place with 3 fish at 6.3 lbs. John Buck managed to take 3rd with 1 fish #2.45 lbs, and Billy Myrick took 4th with 1 fish @ 1.6 lbs. Lee Brannon had the lunker @ 3.48 lbs.

Almost all of the fish came on worms mostly junebug in color. This had to be one of the toughest days we've seen in a long time from a weather standpoint in the morning. But, when the rain stopped and the tide started to return the bite picked up a bit. The ride back to the launch was not nearly as rough as we had expected and neither Lee nor Billy had any problems getting back and loading their boats.

The February tournament is once again on the Tensaw, but it will be out of Cliff's Landing further up river. February is a good time to catch bass in the lower end of the system so make plans to be there.

'Til next time...Keep your hooks sharp.
